Dec 2017 Mosquito Lagoon New Smyrna Daytona Backcountry

Post by CaptMichaelSavedow »

Winter fishing is coming to central Florida, now still on the warm side with water temperatures in the upper 60’s, so a late fall pattern continues so far, Seatrout are widespread through the backcountry on Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River here in the New Smyrna Beach area. Still catching lots of different species with 10 to 15 varieties on most back water trips, in addition the Trout, we are landing Redfish, Snook, Sheepshead, Black Drum, Mangrove Snapper, and more. Live shrimp still the best all around bait, as all the different species love them, as the water has been clearing with dropping water temps, sight fishing for flats Redfish with select size shrimp and live finger mullet are always a winter technique. With cooling water more Sheepshead and Drum come to the boat, this fall Pompano and Whiting have been in the backwaters here from their usual surf areas making for good light tackle fun on these species. Kelly caught a good Black Drum out of a deeper backcountry hole on a variety trip with lots of all the usual species also landed………………
