Tarpon rig, from the beach, help

Post by j8stringer »

I'm headed Gulf side next month, going after Tarpon, from the beach. One rig
will be a 10' with a Baitrunner. A spool of 50 braid and 100lb floro, as leader.
My web searches have show many variations of the same basic bait rig.
Many talk of doubling the line (braid) with a bimini twist then attaching
80-100lb leader.

Can someone help me out with what they mean by "doubling the line"? Do they
mean doubling the line at the loop created by the B.Twist, or a length of
line leading to the Twist loop?

This is my first time with a Tarpon rig. If anyone can post a picture of the connection
at line to leader it would help.

Thanks!

A Bimini twist or spider hitch ( much easier to tie IMHO ) will double you line. If you google knots you will find a Bimini or Spider hitch pretty easy along with a diagram on how to tie one.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

I wouldn't worry too much about the doubling of your line step because you are fishing with sufficiently heavy line and leader. I would avoid that step all together as its not really needed. You only really use that if you are fishing light line. I have caught plenty of 80+ tarpon on straight 50 braid to 80 lbs leader.

Thanks for setting me straight! K.I.S.S. is a good rule of thumb. I went with
heavy braid and leader to not spend the fish easing a light line. Going to
put a bait out while I work a lure.
