what fish is this?

when fishing from the beach what are the medium sized fish chasing the bait in the shallows? im refering to south florida area. they seem to go nuts for the bait hooks

You have to be a bit more descriptive. Shape ? Color ? Do they jump when hooked ? How big is medium size ?

ide say like 6 to 7 inches long have a sharp fin on its back when its extended, rows of teeth inside, silverish color. yes jumping out the water a lil. kinda chubby fish too

ok its def one of those lol, they all look similar. are they mainly for bait or eating?

If it is a leatherjacket / skipjacket it is for sticking you in the hand and making you curse like a trucker. No value for them except for cutbait for bluefish in a pinch. The other two have size and bag limits for them but are good eating fresh.

yea found out about the sticking thing while trying to get it off the hook on the beach, grabbed it like it owed me money and bam stuck its lil fin out and pinched the poop out of me.

good thing I just threw them back and didnt worry about them

Grab one of the Florida saltwater fish idenitfication books. May save you from keeping the wrong fish or throwing the right one back. :wink:
