what fish is this?

when fishing from the beach what are the medium sized fish chasing the bait in the shallows? im refering to south florida area. they seem to go nuts for the bait hooks

You have to be a bit more descriptive. Shape ? Color ? Do they jump when hooked ? How big is medium size ?

Without a picture it is hard to tell. Could be Blue Runner?

If it is a leatherjacket / skipjacket it is for sticking you in the hand and making you curse like a trucker. No value for them except for cutbait for bluefish in a pinch. The other two have size and bag limits for them but are good eating fresh.

Grab one of the Florida saltwater fish idenitfication books. May save you from keeping the wrong fish or throwing the right one back.
