Jig weights

Post by sincityg8 »

So being new to this and what I am reading you will need 250 gram jigs or more if you are over 200' water depth is that correct. What are you all using on the boats your going out on.

TIA

not always.... while I am new to this..... FWIW.... I mainly used 150 gram last trip... current wasn't overly strong and the big thing is I was using 40 braid not 65 or 80 as some were.

Line dia has always allowed lighter weights wether it is bucktails, jigs, or sinkers holding bottom.

I will carry from 120 to 300 to cover my bases with the line dia that I will use.

I had a 150 on when I caught my little snowy grouper at about 400+ feet, it took me a minute to get to the bottom, but I think it depends more on current than anything, we didn't have a huge current so a lighter jig was fine, except that everyone else was on their second cast when mine finally hit bottom! lol

The weight and shape of the jigs needed depends a lot on the current you are fishing. I have from 80 grams (for football size blackfins, but damn runners love them too) to 300 grams. Most of my jigs are 150 to 300 grams. Longer slim jigs will get to the bottom quicker.

When you buy the jigs they will more than likely be in Grams. The Bombers are the only ones that show ounces and grams (that I have seen). But there is something that may help you:

A Grams to Ounces calculator
http://www.metric-conversions.org/weigh ... ounces.htm

Here are the most popular sizes. As a rule of thumb one can say 1 gram per foot of water depth. But the current at the time of fishing rules that rule :nilly:

80 g = 2.82191 oz
100 g = 3.52739 oz
120 g = 4.23287 oz
150 g = 5.29109 oz
200 g = 7.05479 oz
240 g = 8.46575 oz
250 g = 8.81849 oz
300 g = 10.5821 oz
400 g = 14.1095 oz

Ok so out of the 9 jigs that I have 7 are 150 gram and 2 are 200. I guess I will pick up a few more 200 gram ones. I will be fishing 65lb braid on one reel and 40 lb braid on the other reel. With top shots of mono on both. Is sardine a good pattern out here or is mackrel better or just something that glows. Sorry for all the questions I just want to do what ever I can to help my chances of catching some fish. I have a few on my bucket list I would like to scratch off after this trip.

Oh and Ron thanks for taking care of the jigger rod build. :reeling:

It is simple look at jigs like weights. Some days you can fish 200 ft with 2 ounces the next it takes 10 ounces to hold. Bring various sizes as well as styles. Body type can make a huge difference with sink rate and staying down.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

Anything that glows works great. I have better luck with the mackerel patterns, but tend to loose those more. The 40 and the 60 lb braid is good, but most people I know do fish 50 and 65.

Something that hasn't been brought up yet, but I feel can be a factor is not only selecting the correct jig weight for depth+current, but also using jigs within the jig rating of your specific rod. This will allow your rod to give it the most effective action. Not trying to help tacklewhores justify multiple rods per style of fishing, and with some of the jig styles available they will do most of the work, but it is still another facet of the style of fishing you need to consider.

If you speak to Jim at Eastern Tackle his basic guide to jigging in 1g for every 1ft.

This is what I was told and has never let me down. On side note I will jig 400 - 500ft tho with 250 - 300g jigs all depends on the conditions.
