Cowfish & Grouper

Post by Cubanaso1602 »

OK my question is.

I fished the other day in Bill Baggs and cought a Cowfish. he was about 18in i didnt know if i could keep it or not so i decided to realease it. Since it doesn't say anything on the FLW PDF im trying to seek info on this fish. Also whats the deal with the goliath grouper and the other groupers is there a way to sort them apart, an ilustration or something.

thanks

Cuban - I went to the same site Bob posted and printed out all the pics of the pics of the local grouper. If you haven't already make sure you buy a lawstick from your local tackle shop or sports authority. Lists all the lengths for fish.

You could also buy a book listing illustrations and lengths.

Well thanks u guys. Yeah I already bought one yesterday and I also bought a book that has all the fish and their sizes. Please can someone help me lol. Someone told me that if you we caught with a Cowfish you were fined $5000 & or 5 years in jail & or 5 years without entering the Florida Keys. or where you got them. I'm asking because i heard it from some Cuban friends that sometimes tend to exaggerate things and plus some things if they don't know they say they do just to Piss people off. In Cuba i used to eat Cowfish alot they call it there The fisherman's Meat because its white meat. It real nice. Thanks.

I just looked over the FWC site and didn't find anything regarding a fine for cowfish. It did say they were regulated though, but I did't find anything that got into specifics.

No problem. Like i said the site says that they are regulated. Meaning there is some sort of bag limit on them. You may want to ask around a bit more. I'd hate for you to catch a fine because I gave you bad info.

So if I'm reading this right there is no size regulation on the cowfish, but you can only keep 20 a day?

Keep it alive until you get back to shore? Just curious because where I work in the keys there are cowfish all over the place and wouldn't mind trying one.

yoo firebeforeice for your info i know this isnt Cuba! and i also know that ur not from there. plus i was just making a statement regarding a very popular fish in Cuba amongst fishermen. True fishermen which fish with very limited if not without any, instruments. Im not trying to say that we arent fishermen its just that they do risk everything not only for the sport of fishing and the happiness of beign in the ocean but also fish to survive, most of them. Me making a comment about this kind of fish is just to let my fellow friends know that this fish is really good and its is eaten in CUBA, this topic was started with a question about a FISH that anyone can get and if dont have any info get into alot of trouble maybe. so there is no need to be rude. That comment of yours is out of place. so if i were you ill try not to offend anyone else. ok DUDE.! thanks you made my day. jjejejeje lol :)

Yeah, I know, it is kind of vague, it also says moray eels are on there, now they make great shark bait, but is it legal?

Here's some more food for thought...a couple of the species on there (parrotfish and surgeonfish) are actually sold for food by Key Largo Fisheries (presumably caught in the Keys), here is a link to their prices. http://www.keylargofisheries.com/cgi-lo ... 1210694708

Dude, its just when you live in Dade county, you realize that Cuba is a proverbial point of reference for everything in the world.

just a lil' bit sensitive, huh.... ?

However, in your diatribe you brought up good point about Cuban fisherman, but I would think that fishing would actually be easier over there, because of less fishing pressure. Fidel didn't let fishing boats go more than 1/2 mile offshore for like 50 years. Their reefs are basically untouched. I am sure that some of their urban areas are fished out (try fishing off the Malecon), but the majority of the country is probably pretty good. I mean I think it would be waaay harder in like Haiti, than Cuba..... just my 2 cents
