Caught my first shrimps ever tonight. Went out with my gf right before high tide and threw my net for about an hour and a half before i got tired. We got what we came for and being the first time i've caught shrimp i was content with leaving early and not fighting her to stay out late. Hopefully i'll try again soon and get lucky again. Shrimp pasta for this guy! :chef:

Was at the Rick between sunrise and 2:30PM. There were 6-8 people fishing and 4 were targeting Macks (including myself). Water was choppy, milky, dirty with heavy current and wind was blowing hard SE 12-16 MPH. Tide was lowest and slacking at sunrise and switched to incoming around 8AM. I worked the crappie jig in this crazy weather with 4 split shots but the Macks weren't interested. Two mid-size macks came over the rail around 8-9AM on fresh shrimp and live pilchard using a popping cork then action died down. Before tide switched at noon, I experimented with other lures and landed this "dino" Spanish Mack. It measured 21" snout to fork (in the picture the fish is almost touching my belly and cannot even fit the kitchen sink diagonally). I swear I was praying that my 10 lb mono would not break on the hoist. My walmart rod has a broken guide and without the ceramic insert it tends to fray the line after 20 or so casts (Well what do you expect from a cheapo Walmart spin combo LOL but I still love it because of all the Macks I caught with it. I'll fix the rod sometime soon).

The fillets yielded quite a sizable amount of fish steaks - I think twice the amount of fillets I got from 17 inchers. Here are the pics. Tight lines!

Good job Merlin. Trust me. One day you will find a Mack that will need a net to get up. But they are few and far between at the Rick.

No @snapperfanatic, no one had a bucket full. The shrimp were there but in small clusters of 2-3 at best.

And yes this was off of the bridge throwing a cast net.

@xtremeh18!
Thank you very much sir! :toast:

@moose
Thank you! Looking forward to a day like that :D Also belated congrats on the shrimps! They look really delicious!

BTW, I have much respect for people catching shrimps at the Rick with cast nets. I went out at night to watch people catch shrimps some time ago and it took a pair of very well trained eyes to spot the shrimps swimming towards the bridge with just bridge lighting alone. Also some people were so skilled with the cast nets that they barely ever got "wet" even after several retrieves. I also saw people with Cpt. Lee Noga's dip nets catch shrimp at the sea wall but that did not impress me much :lol:

I would have used a net on that one Merlin.

On Tues i hit the old bridge and went 3 for 5 on small macks on jigs. (Two pulled the hooks during the fight). Missed several other hits. The macks showed up briefly for two flurries of action, otherwise it was very slow morning. Spotted one of the biggest T-heads i have ever seen in the bay at 9 or 10 feet. Its head was over two feet wide. It was brown in color which is strange to me and swam along briefly on the surface.

At 1100 AM a guy showed up with small live pilchards and three hand lines. In one hour he landed three macks. Those were the only other macks i saw caught on the bridge besides mine. I left at 1:00 PM.

Sorry for the late post. Went out Monday night for 2 hours and got about 2 gallons. Mostly mediums with a couple large ones in the mix.

Going again tonight

good call joe

thanks Leo...the guys there last night told be tuesday night they all limited out. Shrimp were few and far between but there were all a good size. When i was about to leave after 2 hours they started to run hard for about 30 min towards the front of the bridge and i doubled my total in that half an hour (all be it with smaller ones that i had before). Saw some squids caught too each night ive gone along with some straggler crabs. Ended up more than the last time.

I couldn't make it early today because I replaced the broken guides on my rod and the epoxy still had to set. So I went to the Rick between 5 and 7PM.. I worked the white crappie jig to see what the mack bite was like at sunset.. On my third cast, I saw a dark silhouette swim very fast towards my jig.. and then my line started peeling and the drag screamed like crazy.. The fish was fusiform and had the form of a mackerel.. so I thought I hooked up to a King or a gigantic Spanish Mack.. or maybe just a Bonita. After it ran for a bit with the drag on, I tried to bring it closer but before I could even see a color or a hint of what it was, the fish let go and I saw it swim away.. :mad: :mad: the hook on my crappie jig was seriously bent to an almost 135deg angle.. I cursed the darn crappy hook and tossed couple more casts to see if I could get another bite but nothing happened. I can definitely tell that this fish (whatever it was) was bigger and faster than the 21" Mack I caught last time..

You got a great story from your off hours trip. Must have had a solid hookset for that kind of damage. Don't know if the blues show up there but they are notorius for destroying jigs
Thanks for the report

They have completely messed up the fleas with all the construction the pomps are there for sure though if you have fresh fleas or fishbites. I'm already sick of eating them but from the webcam they are 100% there today especially with low tide around sunset
