It's either menhaden or thread herring... they both have similar contour so it's hard to tell unless I caught some then I would be able to tell the difference just looking for the long thread.. but people were catching a bunch of them on sabiki.

Never seen or heard of a menhaden south of PSL and they have to be snagged or netted. Threadie would be my guess on bait. Nice report by the way.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

Threadfin are silver with blue green. Menhaden are white to tan completely different color scheme and different looking.

Hit the bridge on Thursday. Only four live bait regulars were there at sunrise besides me. One regular live baiter told me he has been skunked the last three times he has been there; he left at 9:30 empty handed again. We discussed the many factors for this year's poor mackerel season at the Rick. Government Cut dredging, heavy winter rain, etc. In my opinion its been the lack of cold weather. So far this winter it hasn't dropped below the low 60's and that means the bay is probably still very warm. At about 8:00 AM one small mackerel came over the rail that ate a live pilchard and i missed a hookup with another small mack that grabbed my white crappie jig. By the time the tide started to turn at 10:00 am there were only about 8-9 serious mackerel fisherman on the entire pier. One regular who seems to be one of the best lure guys for the short time he fishes on the bridge nailed a small mack on a Gotcha that snagged the fish near its dorsal fin, after the tide started to ebb. A few minutes later i hooked up to a decent fat 20 inch fish on a crappie jig, That would be the third and last Spanish mack caught on the bridge that morning.

When that ugly dirty green water is present, I avoid fishing for macks. Not good...that has been the case for the past couple of days..I've been passing and looking mon-wed, and that water is just not appealing for mack fishing....need that green tint color...rain has some fault here along with outgoing tide. Nice NE wind should help with less rain. Good luck out there!

I got curious too and drove there with the family to check out what the fuss was and there were lots of folks shrimping. I saw two guys with long dipping nets at the entrance and bunch of others were casting nets for shrimps. Almost everyone had about one or two dozens and I saw only one guy with about a gallon. Shrimps weren't running thick while I was there. There were a few here and there.

Was at the Rick the whole day... from 7AM till 5PM. I know, I am addicted to fishing (tommy I got a terrible sunburn.. and got poop on my shoulder by a seagull (fortunately not my head or face). I don't think I'll be pulling anything like this in the future for fear of melanoma. LOL

Report is the usual.. Water was green, and very calm until around 2 PM. Afterwards it was windy and water was choppy. Considering it was a saturday, there weren't that many people until around 5 PM. Regarding the catches today, 3-4 Spanish Macks around 16" (TL) came over the rail between 7:40ish till around 8:30 AM all on live pilchard. When all the live bait regulars left around 11, a buddy I befriended at Rick (He is a regular) landed a small cuda and a decent sized Mack sometime around 1-2 PM on live pilchard. I landed a good sized blue runner on gotcha and my 18" (TL) Mack came over the rail around 4PM on crappie jig.. I thought action was gonna pick up but it didn't so overall fishing was slow today at the Rick. A lot of lizard fishes and seagulls were caught and released.

P.S. I am now a firm believer of coolers. 1 gallon of seawater + bag of ice = no need to bleed Macks, just toss in icy saltwater brine right away, firmer, fresher and tastier meat. The difference is night and day.

Hi Green Tide,

Like permitchaser said, they came in various sizes and were pink in color. In case you wondered, the jumbo ones were few, the majority were medium sized and I saw very few small ones but who knows maybe people released them back or kept them alive separately for bait.

why are you measuring them TL? You are aware that regulation size is based on FL for macks, right?

that being said.....this cold coming in sunday night may make the bay more appealing to fish monday...

try cutting a fresh runner into small strips and fish right under the bridge....ive caught some nice gray triggers there before (not consistently, just a thing thats happened a couple times)

Hi Moose,

Thanks for heads up. Yeah, I am aware of the regulation size for most game fishes being from snout to fork. I estimated this one based on my cooler size. If i take off 2" for the tail then it should be around 16" FL"

Are gray triggers good eating fish? I've caught small one before on crappie jig. Thanks! :D

I always do the saltwater brine with my catches, I'm a firm believer in it.

An easy way to remember which fish have to be measured using their fork length is that any fish with a pronounced forked tail (Except a yellowtail snapper) has to be measured that way. And BTW most bridge fisherman use TL for bragging rights and not for legal requirements..

@Moose, Rare, Permitchase, Clarence2Society,
Thanks for the info! I'll try catching grey triggers sometimes and If I land a keeper I'll try how it tastes. I'll also keep in mind that blue runners make great baits. I always keep one alive in my bucket. A fresh cut 2" belly strip works great as a teaser for jigs.

@Xtremeh18
:toast: Thanks buddy! Yes, the saltwater brine is absolutely amazing!

i gave a guy fishing a yo yo next to me a hand sized runner once at sunrise....he dropped it down and less than 5 min later there was a nice gag on the bridge.....it was january so he immediately went home with it lol.....ive never given away a small runner again, and this was like 2 years ago....

i felt like i had good karma after that (even though he kept it out of season) and continued to catch like 30 macks between me and my boy and we kept about 10 nice ones....and also caught a released the biggest spadefish i have ever seen on a crappie jig...it was one of the best days i've ever had there

unfortunately for me triggers are the only thing thats eaten my runner strips

Was at the Rick between 7-9AM. Water was choppy, chill around 62, 9mph wind, incoming tide and outgoing cuurent, four bait regulars, three hobbyists and myself. Five Spanish Macs came over the rail. A bait regular cast out live shrimp, live Picard on popping cork and used bobble flot crappie jig. He was really busy with all the gamut and landed three Macs, one being a decent size around 17" (FL). I landed a 14" and had two decent sized ones bend my jig hooks and come off. They were quite sizable so naturally I got really frustrated but thankful for landing something at least. I couldn't snap a picture because I was in a hurry to get to work. Definitely not a good idea fishing before work LOL.
