Beginner Kayak Fishing

Post by bigseank22 »

Since I am a newb to salt fishing in general... I am planning on taking like 2-3 rods out with me on the yak when I pick it up next week...what size/action and types of rods and reels do you guys typically use? ill usually be going out of bayfront park in homestead in the flats and mangroves so I am assuming snapper, hogs, permit, bone? I dont have much saltwater gear except for a surf rod ..any help is appreciated

3 rods for a beginner might be more than you want to mess with..

I fish that area many times and only take 2 rods, 7' med action type, a 3000 series with 10# braid, and switch off between my 2nd rod bieng another 3000 or a 4000 series if I plan to chuck top-water all day with 15# braid. I'm always artificial baits, soft plastics rigged weedless, doa shrimp, top-water zara spook-jr and the likes, color's light and/or dark.

You focus, targeted species, is also very wide.. add cuda's, jacks, ladyfish, maybe a few trout left in the weeds.

Let us know how it goes! I'm looking to pick up a kayak soon. Found someone selling on CL, either a 5-6 yr/old tarpon 120 (kinda small) or a prowler 13. If it works out for you down there, after I get my yak I'll come meet up!

Unless you are 250 pounds plus neither of those kayaks are small, and both are good choices

My concern was more for taking it out a bit in the ocean as a 13' 6" would be better. A long kayak should track a bit better too. I duno, I'm getting desperate and just want one so I can go out and ninja some fish.
