We got to the ssp around 8 am. Saw the bait all over the place so I decided to toss the new net. As I was gathering the net, I realize that the new net is much smaller than the one that I am used to throwing. I give it a toss and realize that this net isn’t gonna cut the mustard. Good thing rich showed up with his net (getting another new net this weekend for sure).

The mack bite was on and off in the morning so I decide to throw on a big threadfin for tarpon. After 20 minutes or so, I jump one about 60-70 pounds. Only got 1 jump from it before he broke off but it was still pretty cool. Jeremy started fishing the reef for snapper. Ended up catching a nice 14” flounder. It was his first. Lost a few grouper to the rocks and decides to join us mack fishing. We saw what appeared to be a shark attacking a mackerel but chris quickly identified it as a huge barracuda. Looked to be about 5 to 6 feet long. It cut that mack in half like a hot knife thru butter. It hung out at the surface for a few minutes before it moved on. That thing looked like a truck bumper with teeth.

The mack bite fired up a little after the tide change. It was non stop from 3pm til we left at 6. Ended up catching at least 100 of them between the 6 of us. Kept a few of the big ones for dinner.

snapper--The mack bite will certainly last through the end of the month. Once the water heats up real good, I'm not so sure after that. They're are still some kings around and there are definitely some mixed in with the big Spanish. I caught a 25 inch Spanish on Saturday trolling the Egmont channel near the Skyway from my buddy's boat. We also got cut off by a couple of kings.

We were trolling for grouper and those pesky mackerel kept hitting our grouper baits. The mackerel are all over the place right now. We also couldn't stay away from them while bottom fishing the Egmont artificial reefs either. They kept hitting our sardines before we could get them to the bottom.

This is one of the ones we caught while bottom fishing.

Image

I don't have a pic of the big one. I took a real day off Saturday and said no photos or writing while out fishing. That is one my buddy took with my back up point and shoot camera.

Needless to say, we had a lot of fun catching them, we put a few in the box, and I've had a good time eating them the last couple of nights as well.

the mack bite is hot around the skyway from mid march to mid june and again from early october until thanksgiving. they can be caught year around if you know how to read the water. we usually catch some of the biggest macks of the year around christmas.

Nice Macks, Snook & Mario. Finally made it out April 1st for the opening of Grouper, been trying to get back out but working out of town has been pretty much the norm. Got one keeper out of 9 caught.
