how to catch mojarra
I catch a lot of pinfish in a castnet, but I would like to catch more mojara: I sometimes catch a mojarra (sand perch?) or two while cast netting. Is there a better way to target them?

Usually I never get any pinfish in my net and usually get tons of mojarra! Hah what luck

I used to get a bunch with squid tipped sabikis. Sand bottom was where I found them too.

There are usually small ones behind the curve at the haulover jetty mixed in with with the sardines in the sand....cotton wrote:I catch a lot of pinfish in a castnet, but I would like to catch more mojara: I sometimes catch a mojarra (sand perch?) or two while cast netting. My best bet would be for grouper , also try sabiki with squid in card sound road.... Or in keybiscayne at the dog beach. Near the shore not out far.

Re: how to catch mojarra
Well, thanks for the location tip but I fish in the Gulf Shores Alabama area I use pinfish a lot, and they work, but grovers tend to kill them without eating them. Many times, I can see where they've "vampired" them, leaving their little fang marks behind. However when I have a mojarra on it just seems like they'll eat it without hesitation. Maybe I should try trimming the fins on the pins?

How big are the pins you are using and how big are the greys? Silver Jenny are great bait but Pinfish will out last them. Yes, trimming pins is what I do when they are a bit larger than I want

I use the smallest pinfish I can catch in a cast net; 2-3 inches; the grovers on our pier (if they are there) I am targeting would be 12-14 inches.
