bit more luck

Post by Lord of the Rays »

Went to a special spot bout 300km out from adelaide and did some ballooning.
I only brought 2 small bonito and 1 small mackerel to use as bait so we pretty much ran out after the first day.
The Bonito worked a treat! got a hit in 90min in, balloon went bang and the ratchet ran out pretty hard. but i tried to set the hook too soon and ripped the bait out of its mouth while it was running.

that got my adreneline pumping!
so i put the other bonito out and 3hrs later i hooked up on sunset, and caught this 4.5ft bronzie with its stomach hanging out of its mouth. it didnt go hard, not a run, swam straight in, ready to be gaffed :( .

next time im bringing MORE bait and ill have to stay for longer, it was a fun trip.

Good stuff :thumleft: That ray looks pretty cool, almost like a wobbegong(I'm not saying that it could be, I'm aware it's not, just noting the similar shape). A lot of big fish and sharks throw up their stomachs when they're stressed, doesn't necessarily mean they're dead, but it aint a good sign either. Heck even camels do it. Either way good report, and keep 'em coming I know I'm not the only one who enjoys reading reports from "down there".

Your not suppost to use ballons anymore because the seaturtles eat them. If you can use something else, please use it.

ok yeah, that's a banjo ray. they're ok to catch when nothing else is around, but they get in the way otherwise and they dont fight very hard, they dont take runs either. i brought that one straight in on 15lb.

aside from literally vomiting up its guts affecting its fightability from a stressful point of view, it probably wasn't able to breath properly because of that ergo compounding its potential activeness. when we got it up and it hit the deck it went pretty mental though!
