i went again tonight and nothing bit the bait in the 3 hours that i stayed out there on the beach. this was at another location which i dont do well but it was closer to the house.
i should of went back to the other spot but oh well. anyway... what made me leave so early was that i had a shark swim into the line with its mouth open.
and the line was cut cleaned. this has happened to me 6 times this year with 3
cut offs in about 2 hours one night back in June i think. i hate it when these
mouth breathers come around like that. ive lost hundreds of yards to those fish
that cant keep there mouth closed. it seems like its a freak thang but h*ll no it
aint. the odds are greater than one could imagine.

has anyone else had this happen too?

Could it have been bluefish or ladyfish hitting the line. I've had this happen on the jetty when they are thick. They just hit anything they see.

happens all the time just happened to me the othernight..when ever theres tips around you better bring line to the beach with you..some times you will see them jumping and spinning with it in there mouth..

i agree reelemin about bringing extra spool of line to the beach. someone told me that it has happen to them 10 times in one night.
he was so frustrated he just left the beach and went home instead of re-rigging all over again. i dont blame him either, i would of done the same thing after the 2nd time.
but i know for sure it wasn't a bluefish or mac. the line peeled out way to fast and kept on going until i hammered the lever drag. i say shark still. man it just sucks for that to happen especially repeated like a few months ago. i might put a float on to keep the line up so hopefully it doesn't happen.

I always bring spares spools with me. Just in case I get dump by something big or cut off.

We put a 6 oz lead on the line right after the surf to keep the line on the bottom and sea weed off, I wonder if that would help keep the line out of the way of the fish, as its on the bottom.

Or you can put a float on your leader to salvage the rig. I dont think a shark would swim into the line with its mouth open. Probably a mac or blue. What kind of line is it?

Could be that your line is just getting cut on the sandbar or something

no sure it isn't a bar because the line is peeling out with amazing speed. i am using 100lb braid to be exact. one time i had the 100lb mono cut clean so you see... aint no bar
and i have a hard feeling it was a mac or blue. man i mean that line was smoking hard and fast off that reel i tell ya.

I get the same problem 9 out of 10 sharks I catch while fishing off the pier. I think the shark takes the bait, swims towards deeper water along bottom and your line gets cut from rock/coral. Any suggestions on how to prevent this? Maybe a 100ft 180lb shock leader could help. I doubt your luck is that bad to have a shark swim into your line

Now that I think about it we ha this happen to us a lot at spanish river. I'm pretty sure it's a tip taking a run and you getting cut on the sandbar.

deffinitly not the sand bar! i have seen them jump with the line in there mouth.when i used to fish 14/0s they would cut right threw the 300lb as soon as i picked up the rod..
we would buy 50lb spools and bring them to the beach during tornement time.because it was happining to use so much.. i dont think mack or blue fish will cut threw any thing heavier then 100lb as quick as they do. we used to fish strait 200 and 300lb..one night it happen to me and maddawg so many times we ran out of line and went home..

when the line goes in there mouth i think they are swimming around looking for the bait..and when it happens they freak the heck out and take off at lightning speed..you can tell its not a bite because of how fast and jerky the rod is..and soon as you try to set the hook POP... its just some thing that happens.. when there tips around..

we have had it happen when a pack of flipper dolphins came threw my buddie fought a dolphin with the line in its mouth.. it went nuts and was doing all kinds of flips and crap like flipper..crazy as hell

Yeah, if you're using braid it's probably busting off on the bar or reef when a fish hits.

I have had this happen many times, I call them "Bite-Offs". Blacktips are the mystery behind this. When the tips are thick, the "Bite-Offs" are frequent. I don't know why, but they love to bite the line.

Solution: Use weights to hold your line down. Keep your line on the bottom with a break-off weight near shore.
