Re: Juno Fishing Pier Reports 2008
got to the pier at 5:30am bait was EVERYWHERE!!! snook were busting them on top till about 6:30am. anything you droped in the water got hit right away. then after about 30 snook were landed they shut off and became harder to catch but were caught all day. bait stayed thick till i left at 3. small macks were being caught at the T all day. there was a small king missed at the T at day break and a sail was cruisin around. i caught one mack that was foul hooked, i was permitt fishing with crabs, had 2 pick ups but both times it dropped it as soon as i picked up the pole.

Re: Juno Fishing Pier Reports 2008
Dont be surprised if those hits on the crabs were snook, when they get thick you cant cast far enough to get away from them. I'll save my snook fishing for Sept. No Bonitos at all today?

Re: Juno Fishing Pier Reports 2008
Yeah my first time using crabs out there I caught a snook and missed what I was told was probably another.
I'll probably try and get some crabs for next weekend and try my luck again. Wifeys away for the weekend so i'll be spending some serious pier time.

How heavy is the tackle for snook, from the pier. Seriously, I love catching snook , but I'm probably too undergunned to turn/stop a big one. How do you manage keeping her off of everyone elses tackle.-these are 2 reasons I stick to causeways close to the water and beaches.

Re: Juno Fishing Pier Reports 2008
i was at the pier from 1-8 today (work there now) and there were easily 200 snook landed today. 2 of my buddys out there landed over 50 by themselves. a lot of small snook though.
Bigdaddy, a lot of guys use bigger line with bigger rods. just to horse the snook away from the piling. i use a 4/0 with 60 mono and a 60 flouro leader (some use 80). i dont usually snook fish but if i do thats my tackle. if you can keep them from getting wraped that first time you pretty much have them. and they dont get tangled with others line because most are caught straight down and usually not many lines are around

Re: Juno Fishing Pier Reports 2008
If you fish for them please use heavy taCkle 50 lb mono or more on a stout rod. These fish are spawning and full of roe/eggs. The last thing they need is the stress of a drawn out battle. These fish carry the future of our fishery. A quick fight, net, then lowered back into the water. Not preaching as I fish for them out of season as well but in the end we all benifit from this IMHO.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

My 'big rod' is MH (12-30) class with a 4500 Baitrunner spooled with 40lb PP and 30-60 fluoro leader, which has been enough from the causeways and beach-but the rod isn't going to be enough for the pier, not sure about the reel-It's been sweet on fish a large as medium tarpon-but not tried from a pier..
Thanks for the advice about taking care of the breeders-that's really why I asked. I booked a charter last week in SLI-scores of big females were caught- everyone on each boat took great care to whip'em quick and handle them carefully EXCEPT for one Captain-he kept lipping them with a Boga hoisting them and holding them hanging for pictures, before releasing them. I complained, as did others but he just blew it off. PS-He has his own fishing show and fishes the Pro circuit-ya think he'd know better.

Re: Juno Fishing Pier Reports 2008
got to the pier at 5:20am and put out a big blue crab and a nice gog by 5:30. my gog(big one) got slammed but didnt get a hook up. little while later i had a big run on my crab turned out to be a nice snook but not the permitt i was looking for. i put out a few big threadfines with wire leaders hoping for a king but just ended up getting a bonita run and another nice snook. i wanted to keep fishing but had to go to work. there was bait everywhere. big and small baits. saw a few bonnies come through, bluerunners, a big jack and of course snook everywhere. if you can make it to the pier early they are ridiculous. when the sun starts to come up the snook are jumping out of the water in schools eating bait. all in all a good day. ill be out there again tomorrow to work and then friday to fish all day.
by the was nice to meet you rob, sharkman954 and heardhookinsnook was there but didnt get to meet you. here are some pics from the day.
gotta love the sunrise

all the snook moving in

Nice report James.

James11, I saw you there midday yesterday and said wuzup to you. I thought you knew who i was. I saw you there today but i was in the middle of the pier the hole time. My bad, next time i'll introduce myself. Anyway, it was hot as hell, bait everywhere and the Snook bite was good mainly in the morning but Quickly slowed down, still was fun though.
Caught this one 8-12-08

and this one on 8-13-08

Re: Juno Fishing Pier Reports 2008
lol Jetty you should see them at first sunrise they are even thicker than in the pic. Then they move out away from the pier which is cool to see and then a few hours later they move back in, but in smaller numbers. Haven't decided where I want to fish yet, but i'll probably be there Sat. morning early.
