big spanish macks are schooling with the kingfish at the south skyway pier. here is a 23" and 26" we caught sunday. the bonito have showed up also. saw 2 big schools 40 to 50 in each school. all seem to be in the 15 pound range with a few pushing 18 to 20.

ripline,
I will be there this weekend. Hoping to get my first snapper and grouper. Where exactly on the pier would you recommend for them ? like beginning of the pier, middle, the send, before the bait shop...or after...blah ...blah...Also, what time is best for them ?
Thanks

South Skyway, third yellow pedestrian crossing sign from the end of the pier, there's as rockpile just off of this spot on the pier that holds grouper. Good fishin'.

I'll be over there in during Christmas week. Grouper fishing should be good. How about the bonita and mackerel? What bait should be available during that time?

what do you mean the end of pier? so basically go all the way til the end and count backward til the 3rd sign ?
or from pay toll going in and count 3rd sign ?
thanks

11/29/08,

Hello all fished south skyway. I tried to find that rock pile from the 3rd pedestrian sign from the end of the pier I had 0 luck finding it maybe I was just unlucky (Dragged at 6 ounce led across the bottom for 20mins).

Fished from 6pm till around 6am had 3 rods out with pinfish. Had one take all night (around 5 hours In) and surely thought it was a grouper then I get It to the net and its a damn catfish!

Some kids had some Spanish macs. But apart from that no one anywhere was catching either. Guess it was just the cold weather and the strong wind with a mix of strange currents.

Bait was everywhere I could shine my torch and walk up and down the pier for 5 mins north and south and it was just thick in bait.

Anyway I will be back soon next time I'm in Tampa.

If anyone has any pointers I was looking for grouper. After talking to some fisherman there they said there was a rock pile near the tackle shop anyone have any more ideas?

They say all the fish are on the north side but they take pic with the fish on the south side so that all the regulars can have the goods for them which is smart i would do the same lol.. so try the north bro.....

Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

if the barometric pressure would stabilize they will be all over the place. these cold fronts we are having won't let that happen. we're still getting lots of fish but usually we see alot more this time of year.

Hey guys :) New to the board and new to saltwater fishing (I fish lake erie). I've never fished a pier and am looking forward to spending any free time I can find wetting a line. I'll be down in a couple days and should be out late this week- can't wait. Hopefully I'll run into some of you folks down there and can pick up a few pointers! Happy holidays and tight lines!

I'm driving down to see the girls family for Christmas were having our dinner on the 24th so I'm looking to do a 72hr session down there starting Christmas day morning though to Saturday. I'm not sure were to fish yet but I'll probably be 3/4 the way towards the end I drive a white RAV 4 come say hello.

there are lots of locals that fish the pier on a regular basis. they are always willing to give advice. the people there are really nice compared to a lot of other places that i've gone.

i almost forgot to post a report.

got there at 6 am. just as we pull in to park, the lady next to us pulls in a 23" gag. looks like it will be a good day.

no keepers for us today but we were visited by an old friend.
spanish mackeral showed up for a short time.
Image

jeremy's biggest spanish mackeral so far. 25 1/2 inches and about 4 or 5 pounds.

we also had a visit by bonito today. surprise surprise.
Image

this one was caught by the lady next to us. i think her name is trisha. it was her first bonito.

we saw another guy limit out on mangos. most were 14 to 16 inches.

Hit the SSP this morning, and it was SLOW, SLOW, SLOW. Story this week so far. No one caught anything! One lone guy caught 3 grouper (1 keeper) on his first 3 casts with a Bomber, and then it died for him too.

I had a bonita chase my arti, then disappear.
