YEAAAAAAAAAAAAH Buddy.
I'm sure you can add Bolo and Karen to the growing list. Bolo had his share of breakoffs last summer.

All you need is something to horse them away from the pilings.

Re: Juno Fishing Pier Reports 2009
It aint that hard. You can get a bunch of them on spinning rods, just freeline and get the head out of the water right away. I just use a Calstar and the Finnor offshore series. Its not sport in the summer to use anymore then that. I am more looking forward to bonito on spooks more then playing with the local pet snook. Once the season closes there isnt much of a point in messing with them until Sept. September is when you seperate the men from the boys when it comes to snook fishing at Juno, I got 5 keepers last sept. and 13 the year before. You can ask Dave how hard it is to find fish small enough to fit in the slot, last september I personally netted at least 10 over 20 pds for him and about half of those were caught on lures.

You are correct. It isn't hard to hook up with them. It becomes an issue when you're not trying to hook up with them.

Re: Juno Fishing Pier Reports 2009
There havent been any Cobes lately and there wasnt many this season. Even during a real good season this would be really late in the year to be seeing them. I will tell you how the bar looks when this high surf goes down. After every high surf the bar changes a little.
There has been bluefish and tips the last couple days, a pompano here and there and one big king about 25 pds on a live bluefish.

Re: Juno Fishing Pier Reports 2009
Saw lots of pompano being caught this evening around 7:00 on the pier.
Also sounds like the guys shark fishing that were recently chumming and messing with the surfers got some attention. They have now posted max reel size allowed on the pier is a 4/0 on the sign next to where it says no shark fishing. They realize sharks can still be caught on 4/0 but they are tightening down with the recent incident. I was talking with one guy out there and they booted him off earlier in the week for having a 6/0. He said he tried to come back a different time with the same reel and they stopped him at the gate.

Re: Juno Fishing Pier Reports 2009
Found this video that was posted April 21, 2009. Video might have been taken the same day the incident was reported. They never had an issue with us shark fishing the pier although they could stop it but worked with us to look the other way. Unfortunately (and I ran into this 28 years ago) once the public starts to complain they start to shut it down. Took us many years to be able to shark fish the beach again but only at night. The incident with sharks and lines pulled into the surfers, etc, resulted in their complaining and has resulted in the restrictions.

Re: Juno Fishing Pier Reports 2009
One last note. This thread is just info and I do not support the no shark fishing regulation.
Because of the battles that were going on between the fisher people and the surfers and danger of someone getting hurt, there was a big meeting several years ago with county officials and they passed an agreement where the surfers can surf close to the pier on which ever side the break is coming from and going away from the pier. On an North swell they can surf next to the pier on the South side and the fisher people are supposed to move to the other side of the pier. The surfers actually have the right of way due to that agreement.
Most people do not know this and the pier attendants have not posted it so I can understand how people would not know the regulation. The surfers know it though and that is why we see them next to the pier like in that video I found posted. That is the argument I suspect that they used. Around 1:25 into the video if you turn it up you can hear someone saying something like they want something where it is and not somewhere else because there are not surfers in the other place. That taunting the surfers who actually have the right of way that day and the sharks in there may have set this whole think off (Just my opinion and again I support shark fishing). That is one reason we did it at night when the pier was open at night so these incidents would not happen.
Again just info that the surfers actually have the right of way depending on which side the surf is breaking and the lifeguards make the call.

Re: Juno Fishing Pier Reports 2009
I found one of the old articles on the regulations in place and posted below. I do not agree witht he paddle out zone or allowing surfers withing 100' of the pier but this is what the regulations are. If they are coming under the pier near the T then they are in violation. Boats are still held to the 500' limit.
------------------------------------------------------------------
-No surfing within 100' of the pier. The surfing area will be designated
with a black and white checkered flag.
-Paddle out zone NEXT to the pilings during swells is permitted
-Paddle out zone is immediately NEXT to the pilings, on the downdrift
side.
-No paddling out or surfing under the pier.
-Paddle out zone can change, at any time, and will be decided by the
beach patrol.
-When paddling out, surfers must begin to move away from the pier as they
get to the first shelter.
-Green arrows will be placed on the pier, under the railing, where the
paddling surfer will be able to easily see where to start moving away from the pier.
-After paddling out, surfers must stay 100' from the pier.
-The beach patrol will decide where surfing is allowed. North, south,
inside and outside.
-All surfers must adhere to the rules decided by the beach patrol, or
face being banned from the park.

Re: Juno Fishing Pier Reports 2009
Did not mean to derail this thread with the 4/0 restriction I saw. Apologize if I did. Important thing is they were catching a lot of pompano Tuesday evening. Some were using goofy jigs/feathers and others were using triple rigs with shrimp. Nice size fish and wish I had my rod with me.

No big deal for me. I don't shark fish and when I start going to Juno (when the bait shows up) there wont be any surfers around.

Re: Juno Fishing Pier Reports 2009
JAMES cruel seal hunting in Canada doesn't effect you either ? Whether this effects the way you fish or not it should bother you. Your fellow fishermen are losing their rights to fish while the surfers are getting around rules made for everyone. While this rule may not bother you JAMES what about the next one that does have a direct effect on how you fish. I never thought I would have to have this chat with you of all people. In this case it seems like the pier will just be enforcing the reel size limit that was already in place which is fine but to give the surfers the right to come within the marked boundries of the people fishing the pier is fecal matter.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

It's not about you is it James? This effects the entire boatless fishing community.james380 wrote:No big deal for me. I don't shark fish and when I start going to Juno (when the bait shows up) there wont be any surfers around.

Re: Juno Fishing Pier Reports 2009
If there is already a rule of 100' depending on where the break is as Goat noted then whether it bothers me or not it will make no difference. The surfers get the right of way. Is it sh|t? Absolutely. There are no surfers out there in the summer. That's more or less my point.
