Lure Suggestions

Can anybody suggest a lure that will swim right below the water surface, maybe an inch or two? I have a Mirrolure or two that will sink to about five inches, but are there any others?

Are you fishing in Waves or Still Water?

Either way - X raps tend to swim just under the surface...
Gotcha's also when twitched quickly will dart just below and occasionally "pop" the surface a bit.

In still conditions, I really like Zoom Plastics on a weightless Wide Gap 4/0 or so. Let it sink off cast and twitch it just below surface...kinda what I was throwing the day we took th Yaks to Flamngo.

I have a couple Yozuri Hard Core Crank Bait, Super Shallow Type 0, that swims/wobbles just below the surface, stirs up the water, and makes quite a wake doing it.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll give them Yozuris a try. I'll hit the Sports Authority tonite and see what I can find.

Tony, this will be mostly for the surf. Too cold for the Yak, I think. I'll try them this weekend. I have had a very crappy last couple of weeks (with no fishing to boot!), so I am looking forward to get back out there and wet a line for a little bit.

Xraps they catch everything from my experince, I do also like Yosuris as mentioned by other but I do better with Xraps rapellas

Javi, in that case I am with Tom - X Raps in Green olive and ghost white are my # 1 and # 2 choices. However Tom secretly and quietly goes to all the Broward County Wal Marts on delivery night and buys all the olive green ones ....

Just Kidding, gotta go to BPS or any REAL tackle shop to find em.

If buying Yo Zuri, try to get the sinking ones, as the floaters can sometimed get dragged out of the water if winds get high. However the small, small sinking ones are too small to use on all but the stillest days IMHO.....unless you are chucking them with an ultralight, which would make them, mac candy

Not against the X-rap, color is not so important, but how do ya get them to

No I use the x-rap when I want to get deeper than a husky-jerk.. fresh water. HJ's 2 to 4 feet, XR's 3 to 5 feet..

Variable originally asked about lures that would run an inch ot two below the surface...

I understood the first question asked, but I was not sure what you were saying.
I work the xrap at 6 to 12 inches under the surface and it would be closer to the 6inch mark unless I was to tap the tip at the beginning to make it dive to a deeper level, I have never been able to get a depth to the degree you mention, also keep in mind I work from a pier 80% of the time. I am sure the height makes a difference.

I did notice a bit more depth when I work from the beach but still not that deep.

I still tap that box, though sparingly 15 years after he has passed. I think he would be glad to see his passion for fishing carried on. Makes me think of all the times we spent together fishing or otherwise everytime I open it.

If anyone has a problem with casting in the wind those rebels in mackerel coloring are great for windy days. Don't they call 'em wind cheaters or something like that? I switch to those on windy days if if I want any distance.

I use all of the above except the mirro-lures for surface and near surface stuff. I've got Zara Spooks and Super Jr's, Yozuri's and a whole bunch of soft plastics that if you work 'em right and weight 'em right can get 'em to do just about anything you want 'em to. I gotta try some of those Mirro-lures and see what they bring me.

Tom, if you want to get your lures down from the pier I'm surprised an angler with your experience isn't using some split shot or a small trolling(torpedo) weight to adjust to desired depth. I've even put bullet weights, loose on the leader, to vary my depth and action. Lures that float on the surface will use that set-up to get down when first hitting the surface and then retrieve slightly nose down so even surface plugs will stay just beneath the surface.

Whatever works for whoever it works for.

This question was on working just under the surface, not deep and yes if deep is where I want to go I do as you Sunlion and also have many other nifty tricks.

Tom,
I use a drilled out 1/8 oz - 1/4 oz bullet weight to get just under the surface with plugs. Don't get me wrong. I wasn't judging anybody's ability here. Just relaying a method that has proven well for getting the fish that tend to follow and not hit the lure. I go heavier and deeper if I see them still following. It has turned many a slow day of experimentation into a cooler full of fish for this old and weary angler. I agree that with the right amount of weight you would fish much deeper, but when you are fishing from such a high angle of retrieve you tend to cause the lures to nose up a little, changing their designed action even with your rod tip down. People will usually scoff at the amount of tackle I keep handy until they start hearing my drag squealing on a consistant basis.

As an additional note: Thanks to all who contribute here 'cause it helped me adapt my "Northeastern" methods to this locale along with the many tackle shop owners who lent a hand. I will be purchasing a boat soon so I hope that I will still be able to add to the mix when I'm no longer "boatless"
