Late Summer Flamingo Report

Post by Nico Jones »

Here are some photos from my last few trips to Flamingo these past few weeks.

We were finding big schools of reds tailing.
Big schools of trout pushing across flats, even big schools of snook crushing mullet on the flats as well.
We also came across pods of tiny 10" reds that were pouncing on the gulp shrimp.

Lures of choice were New Penny Gulp Shrimp, and white Gambler flappin' shads.
Both rigged on Owner weighted hooks.

Thanks guys.
We had our share of days where we got chased around by storms as well.
You know you're hardcore when your push pole is screaming at you but you still continue to pole after schools of reds.
Until lightning strikes nearby and that steady humming sound the pole had been making became a zap.

That's when you know it's no longer fun!

But hey, those bad days out there are what make the good days great.

That snook posted was the only fish we caught that day.
We arrive to spot one to find a couple reds and snook.
3 minutes into it that snook is boated.
As we're approaching some reds the weather had other plans for us.
That was all for the day.
We spent the rest of the day running back and forth.
Because every time we'd run 14 miles away to another spot, yet another storm would pop up.
We had about 30 minutes of poling time that day.
lol

Yeah the reds have been tricky.
The gulp shrimp has been working on the real finicky ones.
When they're laid up or tailing I like to go with the gulp.
When they're cruising pretty quickly, I throw the flappin' shad.
They've been really weird at times though.
Where they pass up on a perfectly placed gulp shrimp.
So we realized when that's the case, hit them on the head.
Just literally hit them on the nose and get the reaction bite.

We've found them where they're spookier than bones, but then found them where they'll eat anything thrown their way.
One of those days, my buddy hooked a red, lost it about 15' off the bow.
He just gave the gulp a quick little jerk and it slammed it again.
The red came loose again, then he gave it another quick jerk and it nailed it again.
Then he lost it again boatside and it was gone....lol
that was one HUNGRY fish. lol
