Nice hogs, they are usually in pairs, so if you catch one, drop another bait in the same spot and you likely will get the other.

that's true, however this might not be easy when you have to cast 100+ yards into massive current, best time to catch hogs and muttons there is at the middle of high tide and the middle of low tide, it can be frustrating to see how your shrimp is gone in no time and you did not even feel a single bite, the combination of small fish+ riping currents+ rocky bottom = big frustration

So it turned out to be a beautiful day like they said.
Image

Stopped at the bait shop and got some live shrimp, squid and chum.. The kid there hooked it up with some free ice so it was off to a good start. Got to the park and set everything up by 9:30 (I work at night till 7 am so couldn't get there earlier with traffic and all). Water was crystal clear, caught some bait fish right off the bat, had our lines all out and ready...
Image

Well.. it was a long day out in the blazing sun.. Got a sun burn. We caught a couple small grouper, a few grovers only 1 keeper, a blue runner, grunts and pin fish. Later on in the day the ballyhoo started to come around, grabbed a couple but no luck with them.

I was having a real hard time trying to keep my rig n the bottom yesterday the current was too damn strong. i onlly had 2 ounce weights. Im going to bump up to 5 ounce weights next time but maybe you guys can give me some pointer on keeping the rig from drifting with the current.

I fished at Bill Baggs for a good part of Wednesday and for an hour on Thursday and caught more undersized grovers that I can count, 3 keeper grovers and a pinfish that was almost 12".

On wednesday there were a few nice sized muttons hanging out in the area I was fishing, but couldn't get them to hit on shrimp or fresh ballyhoo. I had only brought one crab and within 10 minutes after putting it down in front of the rocks my reel started screaming. I wasn't fast enough though because in the moment it took me to stop throwing my lure and grab the rod, I was already ran into the rocks.

Even though the bite wasn't spectacular it was nice to get back out there fishing, as I have been living in NYC for the past 8 months. I'm heading down to the keys on Saturday to spend the night and come back to Miami on Sunday afternoon. If anyone is going to be down wants some fishing company let me know.

Also, I don't think I'll be spending the entire night on the bridges, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a clean, inexpensive place for me and my brother to stay at. Probably going to be fishing from CH2-Long Key, so in that area would be preferable.

Thanks

There really arent any hotels near the Ch2-Long Key area, you pretty much need to go up to Islamorada or down to Marathon. In Islamorada, try the Keys Lantern or Bluefin Inn, in Marathon, try the Sea Dell or Sanddollar Motel. Or just man up and sleep on the bridge

I dont understand. What are the best tide's to go? and how can u tell if the current is going to be strong or weak?

i alwayz look up tide info and i alwayz go an hour before and after high tide.

i was literally drift fishing. throwing my rig in the opposite direction of where the tide was going and letting the rig drift with the current.

Take your time and read through this whole thread we almost always post what we caught each fish with...

Best bet for your first time is to take live shrimp on a small bucket and 1 rod with a trollrite, walk up and down the seawall and cast at the rocks from the platforms, youd be surprised whats under those rocks!

Fresh cut bait like ballyhoo, goggle eyes, blue runner, and even grunts.
The Judge asked the prostitute, "At what point did you realize you were raped?"
The prostitute replied (wiping away tears), "When the check bounced."
