Might sound like a stupid ? but I was curious is there a good length rod to fish from a kayak?

I would use what I would be most comfortable with. Trial & error.
It is a good question. You're not going to be moving around alot so I could see where rod length would be an issue.

I fish from a 16' kayak. It's nice to have rods that are long enough so that you can extend the tip of the rod past the end of the yak.

That said, my best light rods are usually 7 1\2' long, and I do sometimes troll a 40 reel on a Senator 60 rod for a decent "sleigh" ride

I have a 14' kayak and I usually carry two rods. One is 6' and the other one is only about 5' (used to be 6', but I broke it and after some home repairs, it turned out to be about 5'). Usually, these rods work for me, but as Fuzzy stated, it's a good idea for the rod to be able to reach the ends of the kayak. I often get my line snagged on the front tip of my kayak and experience some difficulties undoing the snag.

I'm relatively new at yakking but, I have paddled off Ft .Laud. beach to about 120' of water. Mostly, I fish in 20 to 90' It's fun to put a freshly caught runner or jack on the 40 and hook something big! I hooked a shark at Sunrise Blvd. and ended up north of Pompano Pier once.

Mostly, sharks are popped off before they get too close to the yak. Yea, I know, I'm a wuss.

Dang dude, you really went for a ride. I've been pulled around alittle, but nothing like that. How's the water condition in FT Lauderdale where you launch from? Most of the condition here in the Miami are is pretty choppy. I don't know if I'd paddle out too far from here. I used to live in Hawaii and there you could really paddle out for about 2 miles and it would be no problem (with swells). Are you using a sit on top kayak?
I was gonna go out fishing today, but the winds are really blowing. How's it there?

apkim1972, I launch right from the strip north of sunrise blvd just north of where the life guard towers end. Won't be out for awhile, the shore break is at least chest high with this wind we've had for the last couple of days. I'm still a little new at yak fishing, only had the yak since Christmas.
I have a Hobie adventure, 16' sit on top yak. Usually carry a couple of rods up top in holders and a couple more inside the hull. I like to fish with a light E wind so when I get tired, I can sail to shore.

I haven't had the luck yet, but I have seen multiple winter Sails brought to yak within a mile from shore. This happened about 3\4 mile south of Oakland Park blvd. I have seen yakkers kite fishing speedo's and runners in this area.

Seems Dania is the hotspot now, north of the pier. Hopefully, the seas will calm down in the next 3 or 4 days so I can get outside.

I wish I had a yak when I lived in Wahiawa back in the late '70's

Fuzzy, wow, thanks for all that info. Maybe I'll see you out there when the wind dies down alittle. As for being new to yak fishing, I've only had my yak since march of this year!. I'm totally new to it! I had a yak in Hawaii, but used it only as a diving platform for spearfishing. If you had one back in the 70's in Wahiawa, you would have been hooking into some of the legendary 100+lbs uluas out there and your name would have been immortalized at Hana Pa'a's Hundred Pounder Plaque!

Personally, being so new, I haven't seen too many kayak fisherman or even heard many stories, but kite fishing for speedos and runners? That sounds like fun!

My kayak doesn't have alot of room, so I have limited myself to two rods, both are light action poles. However, I do have a medium action Ugly Stick with a Penn 550HS reel spooled with 30LBS mono. Most recently, I bought a two speed Okuma Titus 30 for the bigger gamefish in Florida. Now I just need to get a rod for it. I was looking at getting a stand up rod, but I guess that wouldn't work out too well on a kayak. Any suggestions?

Just curious, what were you doing in Wahiawa in the 70's. Were you in the Army?

Yep, spent 3 years at Schofield. Lived off base in Wahiawa and spent most all my free time at the north shore. Did spend a little time around Hotel street

I went partners with a senior staff NCO on an old wooden 36' boat that we kept at the marina at Pearl. We towed homemade bowling pin teasers for marlin. I actually got tired of marlin fishing after 30 or 40 of 'em. Fished Wahiawa fresh water and did a little fishing around Makaha and Mailiili.

I have fished for uluas, never busted the hundred pounder though. Mostly 30 to 50 pounders. We called 'em jacks and the locals never quite understood what we were catching.

That's what I'm talking about. Sounds like you had the time of your (fishig) life out there. I've never heard of getting tired of catching marlin, but I suppose back in the day they were plentiful. The whole time I was at Schofield, a local buddy of mine and I caught 1 marlin. It was a striped marlin at that! As you can imagine, it wasn't that much of a fight, especially on my buddy's 150lb mono. The last cool fishing thing I remember from Oahu was just before I left, locals started doing some serious fishing off of Sea-Doos. I check out some of the rigs and it was pretty ingenius how they were rigging their rides. One guy actually caught a Ahi (yellow fin tuna) in the neighborhood of 80lbs.

I ran around the reservoirs, but never fished it. I've seen lots of talapias get caught out of there. Hey, 30-50lb uluas are totally respectable sizes. I've only speared papios (10lbs or under), never the real deal.
Nevertheless, they are hard fighters and someday I hope to hook one that's over 10lbs. I've seen lots of jack action in Florida, so I'm feeling pretty confident about that.

Have you heard of folks kayakfishing in the everglades? I heard it's terrible down there during the summer (due to mosquitos), but if the actions good enough, I might venture down there with my kayak.

I just Google Earthed it and looking at the pier at Dania, just north of it there appears to be some kind of cut or drainage pipes going out to the ocean. Do you think this is the area that's "hot"? I'm still fairly new to Florida so I'm not even sure if this is the same Dania beach your talking about. I'm assuming Dania beach is right off of East Dania Beach Blvd... am I on the right beach? Thanks.

Yep, apkim1972, that's the Dania! The dredge operation must be stirring up the bottom and throwing some tasties out for the surf zone fish to fight over.

Lots of folks fish the 'glades, I just got back from Collier-seminole state park a couple weeks ago. There's a group of yakers that heads down to Flamingo thursdays and also some weekends most of the winter. It gets a little bad with "swamp angels" but once launched and into the breeze the little bast... skeeters aren't so bad (unless it's been raining) I think Flamingo will be closed soon for a little dredging.

I fish Loxahatchee once in a while and have fished the canal along Tamiami. A little intiminated be themany "gators.

Are you available to fish during the week? Maybe get the "flu"

Fuzzy, I've seem fishes go absolutely crazy when the sea floor is stirred up. Even if there is no food for them, they seem just interested in it. I've never heard of skeeters being called swamp angels, but that sounds much nicer! The biggest concern about fishing the glades was, like you mentioned, the gators. I've actually seen gators along Tamiami and curious as to whether a gator would want to jump ontop your kayak to catch some sun. I've heard of sea kayakers having this problem with sea lions and seals.

For fishing, I'm available most any day of the week. What day did you have in mind? Maybe we can go cash in on the Dania action.

am thinking of getting like a small kayak just large enough so that i can access some good fishing spots that i can't get to on foot. I don't really plan on fishing from it or anything, its just got to be good enough to carry me and some gear across some channels. Any recommendations make/model.... how much should i expect to spend?
