If I am not mistaken that would be Julio he has been doing it since the 80's he actually used to use a coke bottle before he started with a yoyo. Then he progressed to having a fishing rod for permit while he used the yoyo for snappers and snook. He would also get his sandfleas with a bucket and a garbage bag. If that's who you are talking about let me tell you he is a great fisherman, the stories he has about Cuba are just like old man and the sea.gruntking wrote:Zebco wrote:Now just imagine someone fishing a yoyo for shark next to you, swinging a double hooked 20 pound Bonita around in the air in circles before the toss 200 yards out.

And this thread seems to be derailing also. WE SHOULD KEEP THIS ONLY FOR REPORTS PLEASE

A good yoyo story
I was at a party a few months ago and a friend was telling me that in Cuba when he was a kid (50 years ago) that there were a lot of old men that were missing toes because they would fish with yoyos off the beach and rap the string around a toe and then go to sleep. Every now and then a whopper would hit and there goes the toe.
I thought he was kidding me until everyone started and talking about the old country relatives that they have that were missing toes because of that same reason. They never mentioned it before because they thought there relatives were RETARDED! Some are missing more than one toe, That is something.
You lose a toe and you do it again? I would not be able to stop laughing if I saw a guy lose a second toe.
However, My Cuban father in law caught a 30Lb Nurse shark with a yoyo at rickenbacker two years ago. I helped him bring it up. He uses poles and yoyo's and he can cast the yoyo out there a good 30 to 40 YARDS! No kidding. Also, he has all his toes.
Also, he's not my father in law any more, he left the boss of the house!

If I could be any kind of fish, I would be a fisherman

Tavernier
I took the day off on Friday, March 28th and took the family to Tavernier
It was a beautiful day with 0% Precipitation, just the way we like it, and we caught a nice sampling all day long.... Grovers, Mutton, some grunts, some Sheepshead, and even some large parrot fish. We went through 5 dozen live shrimp and 3lb of squid in about 3 hours..... We fed them well and put them back for another day.....
Gotta love the keys.....

We headed down to 5 after the Hammerhead bar-b-que and fished saturday night. Tons of tarpon there although they werent hitting as well as they usaully do. Got 5 or 6 tarpon mainly on pichards which were thick in the light all night. Homeschool Dave from Juno got a 5 pd grover and a couple more keepers. Lots of Crevalles and one Yellow jack, Jewfish took one of the Crevalles on the way in which was fun to watch. Had one good shark run in the middle of the night on the Yellow Jack, but I missed it. The fishing there is always pretty good, but the people suck and that is the nastiest place I have ever fished. Going to have to drive farther south from now on to get away from the people.

thats basically how I feel...I can't deal with channel 2 or 5 on the weekends. thats why weeknights are the best time, but now that long key is closed, I am guessing that tom's harbor cut will turn into a mad house....its seems like I am going to be making a lot of long drives to the lower keys this summer.JunoChris wrote: The fishing there is always pretty good, but the people suck and that is the nastiest place I have ever fished. Bolo,
We didn't take a pic of it. Actually my uncle caught that one. By the way Seth ( herbert's son ) caught a nice one the other night. So how's the Shark fishing going? I'm hoping to pull out a big one soon.

Re: Upper Keys Fishing Reports
hey dudes,
I went to a sweet spot in Key Largo last night from 12:00 until 4:00am. It is a place that I thought was overfished, but I guess since the construction the new bridge, nobody fishes there anymore. ( don't count it against me if I am being vague and googan proof) Regardless, me and buddy caught 20 fish in about 45 minutes on white Berkeley saltwater Gulp shrimp. Last night was the first time I used these lures and they caught everything from Snappers, Snook, sheepshead, and seatrout. ( nothing ate my real shrimp on a poppin cork though) We mostly reeled in Trout, but we did manage a nice 36" snook for a little "catch and release" near the end of the night. If you stood on the bridge, the lights from the adjacent hotel lit up the channel, letting you see big snook stacked up. However, they kept breaking me off on structure. So I went through my pack of Gulp shrimp really quick. We threw everything back, except for four 20 inch seatrout.
One thing though, this place was covered in garbage. It really irks me to see that much crap next to the ocean. I want buy a trash can for this place.

Re: Upper Keys Fishing Reports
Yeah, it was Jewfish creek. I hadn't fished there in years (driven by it 1000 times though), but a friend of mine insisted that there would be fish at night. I kept casting my lure to the exact same spot and kept getting trout after trout. In the middle of the channel, the snook are stacked. However, I don't think that you allowed to fish this place during normal hours, because of the drawbridge operator, but if he is asleep the place is yours.
Good idea about the ladyfish!

last night, I went to Jewfish creek again, but I want to reiterate that it is the worst fishing spot in the world and not a good place to catch anything...my advice keep driving to channel 2

Re: Upper Keys Fishing Reports
Beware!
Comming soon to a drawbridge near you:
It's Googan Fest Summer 2008!!
Come one, come all! No experience necessary! This is a completely free event, all you need is a $19.99 K-Mart special combo and a box of calamari to participate.
This weekend hoards of Googans will invade
the aforementioned drawbridge providing loud music, drunken antics
and tons of trash, leaving a few undersized fish and all discarded bait on site along with ALL the remnants of their multiple birds nested fishing line! They will all but wipe out the entire fish population in 1-2 short nights by keeping everything and anything that they can manage to land.
Shortly after the festival, local property owners will band together and rally to have a security gate complete with "No Fishing!" signs installed.
I say we, all of us from the forum, pitch in and put up a large sign so the can know exactly where this location is! Heck, if we have enough leftover we can even splurge for a couple kegs of brew for them too!

Re: Upper Keys Fishing Reports
well, it is not exactly a secret, but googans don't read this forum anyways. Also the construction is kind of confusing, so thats a good defense.......(grasping for straws.....
