Bait Fish come back up with no eyes?

Post by Surge101 »

As I was fishing Dania yesterday most of my live sardines came up without eyes, some were still alive and breathing without their eyes. Just curious to know what exactly was targeting only the fish's eyes?

I think it's those little Dork Jacks that pick at the eyes.

A pilchard is a scaled sardine and a sardine is a Spanish sardine. Different terms in different places.

I doubt the water pressure off Dania pier is doing it. Crabs or any various small fish will do it as eyes are a delicacy due to their water content.

you can hook a bait on drop it to the bottom an the eyes will pop out its the preasure

next time your fishing just hook a bait up to a 6 ounce an just drop it down wait a second an pull it back up you will see that the eyes are bulgeing

we talked about this a few weeks ago at dania

I have dropped plenty of livies to the bottom in 300 - 600 ft and never had an issue with eyes. Maybe stopping them every couple feet prevents it. So you guys came to the conclusion that the 6 - 12 ft. of water off Dania pier has enough pressure to pop their eyes ? If that was the case every live bottom bait casted there would come back eyeless.

I also was free lining the bait, so I doubt it would be the pressure since I wasn't forcing the bait down.

Dorkjacks, runners, and assorted tropicals would be the cause then seen them all dog pile on many a freelined bait and eat the eyes.

it's not the pressure guy. it's the small fish pecking at it.

maybe a tiny set of goggles would help or even full head gear like the ones the old school divers use to collect sponges, if it works you could make mucho money selling them.

i'm beetting on pinfish too. all last week on the gulf large pods of pinfish were near the surface and that attacked live and cut bait whether fished on the bottom or under a bobber. everytime i threw a live greenie out i would watch the school attack it while the spanish macs stayed on the outside looking in. ive never seen pods of pinfish on the surface like that.

Pinfish are not that abundant at Dania pier any small fish will do the same thing though. So Joe if he is freelining his baits please explain how pressure is causing their eyes to pop out ? I mean based on your theory every fish swimming would be blind.

maybe the bait was already dead when he tossed it out

maybe it was a hungry sea bird that caught it mid cast
maybe it was an alien doing what they do to cows
maybe the bait had no eyes when he tossed it
maybe it was another pilchard doing his buddy a favor an taking his eyes out so he cant see whats coming
maybe it was the work of dagon the fishing god punishing the guy for not paying tribute
maybe it was a goliath catfish
maybe it was a stray bullet that just happend to catch the eyes of the bait
maybe it was zebco with a snorkel an mask trying to play a joke on the guy
maybe it was a gang of needle fish that just felt like eating eyes
maybe it was a sea cucumber that wanted a lil snack
maybe it was me
maybe it was you

the guys bait died sunk to the bottom an a gang of crabs had an orgy next to the bait n then took a break an decided to eat the eyes for a freaking snack how the hell would i know what happend

ive been talking about freaking bottom baits

Maybe the bait shlt itself and the pressure from it made is eyes popped out.
