Already ? That is great news.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

I was south of the inlet today, saw a few tarpon and a small school of snook in the surf. I didn't land much just a few runners and a catfish

Spent Thursday afternoon; last of the outgoing and beginning of the incoming fishing the SouthEast corner (on the inside) of the inlet. Caught a few jacks. Then went over to the North jetty. There were a group of 5 or 6 gentlemen catching the stew outta nice size sheepshead using small crabs. I saw no one else catch any. I was using sand fleas and clams (left over from a pompano seeking expedition) and couldn't land a one. Something was getting my bait and I was bringing in croakers, spots and other miscellaneous fin bearing swimsters but no sheepshead. It seems that the crabs that were doing the best were larger than the fiddlers I've seen and of a dark brown color. I asked one of the gentleman that was doing the catching what kind of crab it was; he replied "crab". I said yes, crab, but what kind, he repeated "crab".

So I come home, google how to catch sheepshead, search this site for where to find fiddler crabs and go to Oscar mayer's to load up on #1 and #2 cutting edge hooks, octopus circle hooks, and new rod n reel (I love being a man, can justify a new rodnreel for any occasion).

Spend Friday early morning calling around trying to find a bait store with fiddler crabs; no luck. Spend the rest of the morning training the dogs how to fetch fiddler crabs. Spent Friday afternoon fetching my own. Thanks to gdm Phil, the Singer Island spot paid off.

Head back to BI Sat morning, tail end of the incoming tide. No one catching anything. Go home, drink beer, put up lights, take a nap. Go back that afternoon for the last of the outgoing tide. I caught grovers, margates, spots, parrotfish and other odd looking things, but not a dang sheepshead. As I'm putting my last crab on a guy pulls up next to me, puts on one of those larger looking crabs that are dark brown and immediately lands a nice sheepshead. Too bad I was using my new setup instead of the old one I keep in the truck, I coulda thrown that one like a bad golf club.

So what are these dark brown larger than normal fiddler crabs? I saw where rock crabs are good but they really didn't look like the pics I have found. Are they a different breed of fiddler crab? On steroids?

On the lighthearted side: While sitting on the inside seawall chatting it up with this older Canadian fella I get a wiff of the stanky stuff. I turn around and sure enough about 50 feet upwind there's King Bubba holding court. About that time the older Canadian fella asks me, "Do you have skunks around here? Is that a skunk?" No sir, its a native plant, we call it skunkweed.

And please do not tell anyone about this sheepshead honey hole for awhile. Its the only one I have so far.

Have you tried fresh/live sand fleas?
I think the crab you are describing is commonly found rocks piling. Dark brown crabs...
I saw a guy catching a permit with it. I used a net with long pole to catch them. But most of them I saw were as big as base ball.
Well, I think I saw some small one too. You may need a trap to catch them...

Are those that garner live sand fleas considered hunters or gatherers? I saw a few folks nabbing them on the beach there. And I see larger crabs on the rocks but those B's are fast to seek cover. Would never get a decent amount by hand, not sure a net would work either with all the crevices they duck into. A trap may be the way to go but I'd think you'd have to leave it out there a bit, and you know what would happen if left unattended.

You are correct Mr Griley: They were baby stone crabs, this is them: http://www.sowal.com/bb/gallery/showima ... =7601&c=29
Which makes that bait illegal to use! Ironic they catching a fish called convicts with em.

Seeking crabs I hit up a few of the very few places on the ICW that are still accessible by foot. Hunting grounds not as rich as those on Singer.

boriqua187: That first pic is of the fiddler crabs I was using. Saw lots of action on em and don't know for sure how many were indeed nabbed by the convicts. I just didn't land any. But from what I know, that's a skill to be developed. Ahhh, the good ol' days when all you needed was a handful of M80s and a net. Let me know when you're planning on being down this way. From what I've seen and heard the last of the outgoing and first of the incoming tide is best. Also: the tide tables for Boynton Beach/South Lake Worth Inlet seem to be 40-60 minutes behind. If the table sez low tide is 4:00 PM it will be slack 3:00-3:20 PM.
