Aug 2017 Mosquito Lagoon New Smyrna Backcountry

Post by CaptMichaelSavedow »

Summer 2017 continues with warm water temperatures, tons of baitfish schools, lots of variety with species biting throughout the backcountry here in Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River at New Smyrna Beach and shallow water fishing on the lagoon grass flats. Most trips in the backcountry give up some surprise catches, like the couple juvenile Goliath Grouper we caught recently, and the Scorpion Fish we got a couple weeks ago. Along with the Redfish and Seatrout we regularly catch, it has been a banner year for Snapper, most are Mangroves, but also catching good looking Lanes and Muttons, lots of fun Jacks mostly Crevalle but also quite a few Horse Eyes around this summer. Sheepshead, Whiting, Croakers, Ladyfish, Snook and others have also been regular catches all summer. Regular summer client Jon and family from Georgia out with me again had another fun trip, with all the usual fish, Jon caught the big Trout along a deep mangrove island drop off……………

New client Stan from Daytona and his son Alex had a great Lagoon flats fishing trip, we poled, hunted and sight fished Redfish on the flats catching 4 up to 27”, then switched to live baiting Seatrout on the drop offs later in the morning catching about a dozen specks up to 22”, Stan got the biggest Red………………

Repeat client Joe from Melbourne, Florida out with his family on a Lagoon trip catching mostly Trout on live bait, but we also spent a little time hunting the flats and Joe sight cast a good Redfish………..
