Peacock Bass fishing in S. Florida????

Post by captken »

I live 400 miles NW of Miami but occasionally get down that way. I'd like to bring my yak down and chase Peacock Bass. I've caught a few in and around the Griffin Rd. Canal but my favorite place is now posted.

I'll probably try to fish a couple of days because gas is too expensive for a day trip and I wouldn't have much time to fish. Any way you cut it, it will be expensive so I need some insider information to help me get to a good area. I know how to catch them and what to catch them on but I just don't know where.

I've been retired for more than 10 years and don't have a lot of cash. I'll try to get my son to come along to help with expenses.

I'd appreciate any info. E-mail or IM if you don't want to post it in the open here.

You can get free maps and more info for peacock Bass @ myfwc.com. They have maps of snapper creek, tamiami trail as well as launch sites for your yak. Good luck. Oh, there's also a guide listed on this site who specializes in catching peacock bass. Drop him an email and see what info he'll share. I believe his name is Jim Anson, I'm not 100% sure though.

Well it sounds like you've doen it before and have it down. Many areas that were accesible before are posted now, and more get posted every day for one reason or another.

The common baits are X-rap, Husky-Jerk, and Storm swim-shads, but most baits of that style will produce.

Check the FWC site for additional information, and here is a link to get ya started, http://myfwc.com/Fishing/pdf/PeacockBassBrochure.pdf , it gives you a little history and all the public drainage canals with access information. That same site, up one, has downloadable pdfs for each canal listed.

The bottom line is if you see water, can park without being towed, and walk the bank without being harassed for tresspassing go for it. Now for our benifit and the future of the fishery, please be considerate don't bother the local residents and leave an area cleaner that it was when you arrived.

If you want to do your homework get on Google Earth and target some areas in advance, then when you arrive drive by, look, and fish. Catch, Photo, and Release.

If you have specific areas in mind PM me and I'll happliy try to help.

The comment that went sort of "leave it cleaner than you found it" rings true everywhere. So many people trash our fishing areas it is no wonder that they get posted.

One of my favorite areas will probably be posted soon and the sad part is that it is fishermen trashing the place. Empty bottles, cans, worm boxes, sandwich wrappers mount up after a while. I throw my trash back in my cooler most of the time.

The best Peacock spot I have fished, way out Griffin Rd, was posted last year. I'm sure I have caught 50 or more Peacocks there along with Bass up to 7# or so.

My biggest so far was caught in the strip pit lake at the Snapper Creek interchange.
