Disabled Veterans Fishing group needs help...

Post by 4wheelangler »

Hey guys!

Things are finally starting to come together and we had our first group of disabled veterans out for some fishing on Jan 22nd. Most of these guys and gal hadn't been fishing in years due to different levels of disabilities! Needless to say they had a blast. They have another group tentatively scheduled for April 16th. The plan is to have groups come out once or twice a month on a regular basis. These trips are on a 40ft Corinthian Cat but we would also like to include a couple of pier trips per month, this way they can learn and get out fishing even if they don't have a boat.

Here's what we need:

1. Volunteers(1-3 each trip), to assist in baiting hooks, landing fish, general regulations advice, etc.
2. Fishing gear, all types. If you know of anyone or even have old usable gear lying around that you're willing to part with, i.e. poles, reels, terminal tackle, etc. please contact me asap.
3. Lecturers for workshops and education. Teach general fishing knowledge, basic skills, knot tying, bait preparation, baiting hooks, weather considerations, etc.

The organization is a 25 year established 501(c)(3) Nonprofit located in Miami. All donations are tax deductible and documentable.

If you do this on a Sunday (I work Saturdays) I'll help where I can. My salt water fishing knowledge is still pretty limited but I know how to be a go-fer :)

It would be an honor to help those that gave so much for the freedoms I enjoy.

Bbrunner, future dates are tentative right now but will be regularly scheduled soon.

FF73: The trip is out of Coconut Grove. I might be up in your area on Thursday, I'll call you to see if you're around.

I might be mistake, but since he posted shake-A- leg:
Shake-A-Leg Miami
2620 South Bayshore Drive
Coconut Grove, Fl 33133

I will be more then happy to get some new terminal tackle. Just let me know what you need & I will pick it up. I need a way to drop it off on Wed/thurday as I work on firday. Let me know!

That is correct on the location and the time is 9:30 am until 2pm.

Rare: Mostly mid-sized swivels, 1/0 2/0 sinkers, hooks. An assortment would be great. Last trip I went through most of my 1/0 & 2/0 hooks and 1-3 oz sinkers. This time I got a couple packs of snelled hooks to see if it works out better.. Since most of these folks don't know how to fish they easily hang up on the bottom and tend to loose tackle like crazy.

You can drop off at the office, just leave it with John or Jenny and tell them it's for the veterans fishing. They can provide you with a donation-in-kind letter for your taxes. I'll probably be out there both days(Wed & Thurs) so give me a heads up on the time and maybe we can meet.

Thanks Rare.
4wheel, can't promise, but I'll do my best to be there, even if it's for part of the time. If I come, I'll also bring some extra tackle with me. I have a conventional rod to donate, but unfortunately don't have a reel. It's an 8' rod, and needs a smaller reel 20-40lb?

It was great meeting you as well. It's funny how things worked out, I wasn't planning on being there so early today. Many thanks for the gear, it will be put to good use. I'll make sure to snap some pictures.

PM me a daytime shipping address.

You said you went through sinkers like crazy.

In that same PM, let me know the most common sinkers you use/need and I'll get with one of those bulk lead sinker makers on Ebay and have several pounds of sinkers sent to you.
