Ozello Shrimper.com

Post by Spaatz »

Makes personal recreational or "sport shrimping" equipment for shrimpers who walk the grass flats. No boat is needed and a single person can catch up to five gallons in a single night while having a great time. All equipment is hand made and sold by the inventor.

Try Going Out with a Light at Night to See

Post by Spaatz »

Don't know. If you want to get an idea, the next time you are out night fishing, go out to a grass flat at low tide with a light mounted on a hat or helmet and see how many orange eyes reflect back at you.

Up in Tampa Bay, the season runs from late May to early July and we catch a lot of them. Usually anywhere between 3 to 5 gallons a person each night. The trick is to find grass flats adjacent to a channel that drains out to sea (intracoastal on your side I imagine.) When low tide starts at sunset, follow the tide out onto the grass flats and shrimp. The shrimp are trapped there and can't move until the tide comes back in, making them easy targets. When the tide comes back in, turn around and let it follow you in.

I do know that people up in Englewood shrimp using alternative methods so the shrimp are definitely there. Florida has them pretty much everywhere. The trick is finding the right combination of time of year, tide and location.

Thre are NO grass flats here in SE florida, however the shrimp do run through pretty plentiful. A gadget like this could be useful with a much longer telescopic pole to take advantage of passing shrimp in the inlets.

Back beforethe babies came, we used to go out with a bright light at the Hillsborough inlet bridge on A1A and use a pool dipper and just scoop up the passers by at night. I like this closeadble lid on the Ozello Shrimper - nice idea !!

CYD, some years they are so plentiful it is sickening, others, not. last year sucked, but if the mullet run is any indication of the shrim comin down, good stuff is on the way.

A few guys down south still hit it but it is tough for me to go in the wee hours. Some like incoming, I like outgoing, but either way, anytime the water is movin through the inlets !
