Will there is a sping run of Pompano?

Post by hugehail »

This has been a warm winter. Does that mean that the spring run will not be as good this year for the Palm Beaches
southward? Ive looked at quite a few years of fishing reports from the Palm Beach post. They had daily reports back in the 50s and 60s.
And as long as the wind persisted out of the southeast in the spring the pompano fishing was good, regardless
if the winter had been warm. I will be down there fishing the surf from March 19 to April 14th and I hope the fishing is decent.

They'll be around....saw a ton headed to the keys / FL bay during the fall run.

Why do the pompano not stay around along coastal southeast FL in winter? They can be found north at Jensen and south in the Keys
and Florida Bay. LW pier has had very few pomps since the fall run ended in mid November. Is this because the water stays too clear with
little wave action in winter around LW pier down to Dania? It seems like you need sustained onshore winds for a few days in this
area to stir things up enough for Pompano. In the fall this is accomplished with northeast winds and in the spring its accomplished
with southeast winds. But it winter the wind shifts back and forth frequently between nw and se and never stays out of one
direction long enough to stir up the water. That is my theory on why pompano fishing in winter tends to be north of Juno.
I think the reason why the pomp fishing is better father north in winter is that the coast faces the northeast and the water
is a lot nore shallow offshore (compared to farther south) so that there is more wave action. Thoughts? disagreements?

Idk about up north, but i do know that they can catch pomps in clear water! It really doesnt even matter wind direction for folks up north, but down here, if it aint a SE 15+ feb, mar, or april, they hardly ever chew. Fall bite is usually hit or miss further south. I have better luck with sheepies during the fall than pomps...

in SFL we get large schools of juveniles during fall with a few keepers here and there if you are lucky. During winter they bite, but very infrequently / inconsistently. In spring all those juveniles pass through again, but a lot of them are now keepers. I think they hang out in the best temp/food areas and that just doesn't include SFL. The bulk of them simply pass by twice a year headed to better temp/food locations.

Yep, know exactly what you mean. 20 lines out and one fish on can make a hell of a mess.
