East Coast Mullet run 2014 Reports ONLY

Post by fishnfool73 »

Spent the weekend in Daytona on the beach. From the balcony could see loads of mullet night and day getting worked pretty good. The schools were from an acre to a football field and mainly fingers. They were in no rush to move so I think they are stacking and waiting on a good storm to move south.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

Tommy seems pretty confident it may be early this year. I have faith in his salty spot on predictions. I am looking forward to an dark, wet morning stroll through the Anglins planks as we all try to catch our share. In the dog days of summer, I miss the cool autumn breeze. Looking forward to it!

From the amount of mullet I saw and their actions, I feel they are stacking up early and just waiting on a good storm to start moving. I go to Daytona this weekend every year for the last 7 years and this is the first time I have seen fingers on the beach there and also the most I have ever seen. The snook , jacks, tarpon, sharks and dolphin were working them hard. Typical the one year I don't bring a rod this happens.

Also starting to see pods of white bait passing Anglins Pier heading south yesterday against the North current, this last week a lot of glass minnows moving to which would say Spanish Macks should be starting to move in.

I have fished the beaches by the pier and never had an issue. Ponce Inlet would be another great option in the area. I have done great there.

If it means anything, I saw my first couple of sharks jumping near the outer edge of the far sandbar this past weekend. First time since February I think. Palm beach. Anyone have reports of blue fish yet or is it still a bit early?

Blowing that one direction that gets most people on the forums juices flowing  this is where most people who have a clue stop posting reports until it's all over and then the "pic heavy" reports pour in. That's a another clue for those who don't know, start paying attention to the water and don't wait for reports to come in. You'll be too late internet princess!

Ok so I loaded my Expedition with my gear and took my first ride north Saturday - Sunday I did not fish because I am scouting though when I reach Sebastian it was very close but I had the Girls with me and I promised them I would just scout so I took them to numerous places from Fort Lauderdale north to St augustine yes the little one was hating life. I saw bait Small Sardines, glass minnows and some pilchards almost everywhere I went which was Boynton Inlet - just North of Jupiter - Vero Beach - Sebastian Inlet - these two I only saw some mullet and not a ton Ponce Inlet - St Augustine.

I saw mullet in the back waters on my drive except for Sebastian there was some just north on Melbourne Beach also and some around Ponce inlet nothing to write home about but you could see like Chris said they are amassing and its getting close, while I was at Sebastian saw permit and some nice chunky Reds caught, no one was fishing for the Permits not sure why or maybe they did not see them, snook were everywhere and some nice Mangroves.

The water was perfect color and really has me revving to get to fishing to the north, but I am going to probably hit the snook on opening day down south and then go north and we will have to see what happens around here the next couple of days.

Spanish Macks are back in the area for sure so things are moving in the right direction.

I saw medium pod of mullets on pompano pier, shallow water on Saturday afternoon. It was 1 LB. I threw net and caught some... I don't know if these mullets were from North or South...They may be a little too big for snook to swallow.

OK, sounds like all size mullets are snook candy?

What is your preference between 4 - 5" finger mullet and a ft long mullet?
