Sat Jan 6, 2007 DI dock & Pier report

Post by Pier#r »

Got a late start watching the radar and hoping the rain would move away from Dauphin Island
before I got there from Mobile.
Stopped by Southern Bama for some live shrimp (they had some nice mixed ones!)
At 11 am it was still raining at the DIPier so I went to my sis & b-n-l's house on the back bay,
hoping to rig up under the carport and wait out the rain.

The water looked good there, visibility was about 4 feet,
and I thought why not try a shrimp or two

So I rigged up my ultralight (4# spinning) and the second cast with the 1st shrimp produced a fat 13 1/2" flounder
The only net close enough to use was one of my sister's crab baskets, but any port in a storm...
With the next shrimp I hooked a nice sheepshead that put up a whale of a fight in close quarters,
but it broke off after a few minutes by diving under the dock :x

The third shrimp soon produced another sheepshead bite,
this 3#r that was eventually subdued and netted to join the flounder in my cooler.

I had about a dozen bites over the next couple of hours while it rained off and on.
Landed several more sheeps (kept 3 plus the flounder) and C&Red a short flounder.
The bite died when the rain quit and the tide changed so I went over to the DIPier.

The only other fishers on the pier were my buddy Gumbo and his lady.
They hadn't had any luck on dead shrimp despite seeing some sheepshead around the piling at the tide change.
I asked Gumbo to help me use up my live shrimp hoping we would catch them some for dinner.

My first shrimp produced this one (3# 11 oz)

And a little while later I lucked into this brute (6# 11 oz) caught on 8# spinning tackle

We all had to get our pictures taken with it :D

They took this one home, plus another weighing about 5 pounds that I caught a little while later.
But time was short, the pier closes at 5pm now :(
Still we had to take time to enjoy the sunset on such a fine day

Thank You Lord! :D

P.S. What would a report be without a "money shot"

Thanks folks!
Some good sheepshead fishing to be had in this area over the next couple of months :D

bassZooKa, according to this chart a sheepshead that size would likely be at least 10 years old
