Lakes and canals in miami with backcast space?

Post by Hurricaneredbone »

Im new to the miami area and it seems like this city is anti-fishing. Every time i find a suitable fly fishing spot, it is accompanied by no fishing or trespassing signs. Ive found a couple spots but they have limited back cast space, caught some nice size peacocks and a nice bass this morning, but i was hoping maybe someone would want to trade spots with me. I am all catch and release and i know discretion so your spots wont be compromised, i would expect the same in return...

You hit the nail in the head... The city IS not fishing friendly. Honestly the only place I have enough space to backcast and can catch fish at is a private community, or up in broward.

Can you roll cast.Sometimes when your in a spot and have no Room for a back cast, roll casting is the only way to get it out there. :toast:

It's not that Florida is anti-fishing, it is anti everything except living is a concrete jungle.
Most places are posted for multiple reasons privacy is one, liability is another, and due to goons making a total mess leaving behind traces of human activity...

not a "great" spot....but there are some fish...try the floodgates down tamiami trail (8th st) west of the casino....they usually hold LMB and sometimes if you fish tight along the shore you get some peas...also, where the canals cross there is usually some action...haven't fished there in a while since i got into saltwater fishing, but i live super close....so if you wanna give it a shot lmk...these aren't secret spots, but they can produce at times if you try

Try Tropical Park, there are grassy banks with plenty of room.

Ive heard of some of those spots, i live up in north miami though. If im driving down that far i have a few good spots down there anyway. I found a little lake today that was loaded. In 20 mins i caught a 6lber, 3x 2-3lb mayan cichlids, a handfull of 1-2lb bass, and hooked a monster 8ish lb bass that spat the hook mid fight.... But of course i was standing among no fishing signs and my fun soon ended. Does anybody know if lake kendal is open to the public? Ive there are moster peacocks in there but on google earth it looks like its a community lake so i dont know if it is accessible....

This. Once you get good at it, you don't need to fully load the rod to get a nice cast. One thing I used to do was up the line weight by one. For example, I'd put a 6wt weight forward line on a 5wt rod. Lee Wulff triangle tapers are awesome for this as well...and are one of my favorite lines.

Im pretty good with role casts but they are quite limiting. Plus nothing feels better then a well executed doublehaul casted. Ive been exploring a lot and ive found some consistent spots for bass and peacocks. Im going to try my hand at snakeheads next weekend though... Those canals along the everglades have plenty of casting space.
