Re: Anglins Pier Fishing Reports 2008 "ONLY REPORTS"
Well its my first time in FL after about 4 months in NV and I must say its great to be back. I had a ridiculous time getting here over the course of the last three days, due to weather delays and incompetent airline employees, but I made it and my first priority was getting out on the pier for some early AM fishing!
I hit up Anglins with three of my good friends and saw Whodey, PhishingPhanatic, Cowboy Justin and Team Salt Life out there. I nailed two spanish macks in the morning, a nice lesser AJ overnight on a sandflea, and a trigger fish in the morning on cut bait.
Tonight I will be going to this great Japanese restaurant by my house called Marumi Sushi. Check them out at http://www.marumisushi.com. The chef is going to prepare our catch in a variety of ways for my friends and family as we celebrate my birthday and our success. It is going to be a spectacular dinner. Anyone that enjoys really great authentic Japanese food, not just sushi, needs to try this place out. It really is awesome.
Anyway, I cant wait to get back out and do it again. Hopefully I will get to see some more of you in the near future.

Re: Anglins Pier Fishing Reports 2008 "ONLY REPORTS"
Hey all,
Went out to Anglin's this morning, arrived @ 06:15 and stayed till 09:25. Water was almost dead calm, very little wind, and water as clear as they come. Saw alot of fish swimming around the pier, large with red and blue eating things off the pier pillars, not sure what they were, but NOTHING biting. Sure lost alot of bait. Plenty puffer fish around stealing the bait. I caught one small rock fish, threw him (or her) back. Someone (Loyd?) caught a NICE size porgy, must have been 18". Saw a few grunts come up, 1 spottail pinfish, and that was about that.

It is a far better thing to have caught and lost, than to have never caught at all.

Re: Anglins Pier Fishing Reports 2008 "ONLY REPORTS"
What is the best way to catch them?
I tried, shrimp, then sand fleas, then squid, tried combos of all, with weights, and without weights, even a pompano jig, nothing. I tried with mon, and floro, still nothing. Any ideas?

You believing and the FWC rules are two different things. It is not illegal to keep Parrotfish. This has already been discussed on another thread.Gotcha wrote:Don't get caught I BELIEVE THEIR ILLEGAL.

With trips to the keys on the bridges, I seem to catch alot of them on silversides when going after mangroves if that helps.

Believe it or not, I even tried silversides to no avail. Could it have been that the water was exceptionally clear?

Didn't go today, but my dad did. According to him he caught a short mutton and lost something big to the pileons.

Myself, Choi & Aj took a walk at the pier earlier and Ozzy landed 1 mack. Nothing's been happening @ the T that time but Chad and or Tj caught a couple of Aj's prior to our arrival. The wind is picking up and I hope it'll be better tomorrow... It was nice seeing you Bruce (Boruchlen),Caught anything?

That is a squid...NOT A CUTTLEFISH. Pic is a little blurry, but it looks to be a Caribbean Reef Squid (Sepioteuthis sepioidea).Rijkaard wrote:this is one of the several I caught last year at anglins, everybody told me about cuttlefish, but when I went to clean them for dinner the internal bone looked so much like a squid, cuttlefish bone is WAY much thicker and big, no big deal, they were delicious anywayJDL wrote:Next time you guys get one take a pic and we can ID it.fishnfool73 wrote:I have heard them called cuttlefish since I started fishing the piers. Thank you for the sarcasm, but that is definitely a species of squid and NOT a cuttlefish. Again, cuttlefish are not found in US waters.bolo wrote:What JDL is incorrect? Say it isn't so.

The squid gatorkong caught looks to be a common illex squid (Illex sp) (the squid purchased in the bait boxes). Ricky's squid looks to be a Caribbean Reef Squid, which is a common species on the shallow reefs of the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Florida.

Re: Anglins Pier Fishing Reports 2008 "ONLY REPORTS"
Hey all, Went out to the pier from 12:30 - 17:15. Nice to see you too Janet.
I caught 2 - 11" lane snappers, one on shrimp and one on squid using 1/0 circle hooks. I also caught 2 spottail pinfish.
Tried for a mack when they started running @ 16:30 with a gotcha, but, no gotcha mack for me. There were a few guys there catching them, and 1 was pulling them in at quite a rapid pace. He caught and landed 3 in +- 8 minutes, 1 got away, and then another 15 minutes later using a rapala some-thing-or-other. Any ideas anyone?
That was all I saw from the middle hut, did not get out to the T, so I don't know how that went out there.

Re: Anglins Pier Fishing Reports 2008 "ONLY REPORTS"
I haven't been out but I would suggest 3 rods. One rod for pompano fishing with a pompano rig , use frozen sandfleas or shrimp for bait unless you want to get live sand fleas. This reel should have 12 - 25 lb mono on it. The best bite is normally sunrise/sunset though high tide works no matter what the time. Fish this rig from the center hut to the frst west sand bar.
Bring 2 other light to med spinners with 6 - 12 lb test put some 25 -30 lb mono leader on them. On one put a Rapala X rap in albino shiner or silver . This will be for mackeral, jacks, ladyfish, or bluefish. On the other put a 1/4 or 1/2 oz white, pink, or yellow jig. Add a pinch of shrimp. Cast it out and bounce it along the bottom from the center hut to the shore. This will land any of the above named fish.
This should cover you for what is biting this time of year.

Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

I will be heading out for surf fishing early (0 dark hundred) thursday morning for a few hours before everyone else wakes up . Will these setups work also?
