Dont really prefer making fishless reports but anyways:
The last few evenings had been looking promising to get out & soak some bait for just a few, but something seemed to come up or I just get the urge to 'not go' at the last minute. I decided Tuesday night that I would make myself get out for a few the next night & started getting a couple things in order to go. So before heading to the office in the morning, I got together the stuff ahead of time so that I would just go as soon as possible. Watched the weather conditions all day outside & saw the rain of the front hit in the late afternoon, hoping by evening time it had passed. Get home, got the mini feral army taken care of & made the call to the B who was at work & who already knew where I was going when she answered. I thought maybe instead to hit the beach but after reconsidering a bit got the original stuff I had together loaded & hit the road- I was traveling real light tonight. Got to the place around 8:20 pm & saw patrol cars about (thinking I would be told I had to leave) but was soon making my way out to the dock. Rain had already passed & the temp had dropped to pretty cool but there was no wind at all. The water was clear & was like a glass table for the most part. The rain was still fresh on the planks so I knew that with these conditions, silence & stealth mode would have to be in high gear. Looked out & there was only one other person at the end but I cared less about him or what he was catching. I surveyed the water & did not see any fish, but got the line out into the grass anyway & eased it in towards its edge. Then I waited but not long as four fish appeared from different areas of the grass & eventually the four of them grouped together. Looked again- there are five now. The guy on the end was hooking up on plenty of bottom fish but I still didnt care. The five stayed out a ways just doing their thing & then something got busted by the seawall down the way & that caused them to jet. So I waited again & soon here they come again out of the grass. Five again. Closer they got eventually & I found myself backing away from the edge so that hopefully they would not notice me. I am focused on them & stayed dead still in one spot to the point where the anticipation would soon be broken by the sound of footsteps coming up the path & then onto the dock with wet flip flops on wet planks. The guy walks by, asked if I catch anything & keeps walking to the end to talk to the old guy. Remarking real loud about how this will be a great night for fishing. By that time, the fish had already blasted off the first moment he stepped on the dock. He comes back down & stops for a bit to look over the side. There just happened to be a snook cruising under at that point & he remarked about how it would make two nice dinners. Then he went back off to who knows where. So I wait again & soon the now six fish start to return slowly from out of the grass. So I wait some more but soon they blast back because a boat out in the channel had sent some wakes now crashing into the seawall. Great. So checking my watch for the time, the clock is ticking on this window. I take the moment to try to ease my line a little closer. Slowly here come the six... no, seven now, easing back onto the sandy area closer & closer to the dock. I notice this time a couple are larger then the others but they still evenutally fall into some sort of formation & slowly make there way to near in front of where I am standing. Almost like they knew I was there & they were just effing with me. I was hoping most of the time they would split up some & be able to be singled away from the small school of each other. That anticipation feeling returns but once again is interrupted by someone walking up the path & then walking real loud to the end looking over the sides as if expecting to see something. Stops close to where I was but the seven had already blasted back to the grass minutes ago. So he walks back off & so I wait again. I took that moment to carefully get the line back in & get a fresh bait on & readjust the split shot. I see the seven again make there way out of grass but are staying away from the area. Time is running out. They circle & split out of formation & then are gone so I take the moment to get the cast out into the sand near by where they have been staying the most. It isnt long before the seven return back in formation & they are once again back to feeding on the bottom- just not interested in what I have on nearby. Closer & closer they get until I hear the sound that I never thought I would hope to hear- a cast net hitting the water.
The guy on the end of the dock, even though he has been doing pretty steady all this time on the bottom feeders, decided for whatever reason, to throw a castnet into the sandy side of the clear, baitless water. Of coarse guess where the fish went. In fact I didnt even see them jet they were gone so fast. I waited a few minutes to see if they would resume the pattern, but they didnt show again. I reeled up, packed up what little sht I had, & left.
