Last minute fishing trip with Fishnfool. Left Sunday morning with fresh bait to Channel 2. Fishing was slow but we manage to scored some decent fish. Cleaned the bridge a bit.

Not a bad way to spend the day .... except for my back to back nurses that should have been muttons.

Nurse Sharks are the garbage fish of the sea.

I hate that, especially with the small 3-4 ft nurses. You'll be fighting them and getting them in, praying that it is a mutton or grouper. Then you get the first look at it  At least with the bigger 6+ ft nurses, you know that you don't have an eating fish on, so you aren't setting yourself up for dissapointment.

I was down there with my girlfriend on Saturday, the bite was so-so. Jumped a bunch of big tarpon (75 lbers +) on crabs and chunked mullet. The snapper bite was very off, got a few 10-11" mangroves that we threw back (not worth the effort to fillet) and my girlfriend picked up one nice 18-19" mangrove. Also got a couple 14-15" yellow jacks, kept 1 for ceviche and swam the other out on the 14/0, but nothing picked it up. Also saw an azzwipe next to us walking up and down the bridge with a speargun, shooting at tarpon. He must have fired the thing 50 times, but never hit one. Called FWC, and they showed up quickly. The guy hid his speargun next to a garbage can, and FWC never did anything about it. They came and checked my cooler afterwards, and I asked why they let him go, they said they couldn't prove he was shooting it. The officer also said that they had a bunch of undersized yellowtail in their cooler, but he let them go with a "verbal warning." WTF?!

Some pics..

The speargun guy...look at the guy in the white shirt on the right, holding a speargun over the rail

Anyone know what this is? Looks like a shrimp body, with a crab claw. He jumped out of a big mass of coral and tangled line I dragged off the bottom.

Melissa's nice grover

Dinner (before cooking)...yellow jack ceviche and snapper Baja-style fish tacos.

Yeah, I think it is some type of boxing-glove shrimp, but I can't find the one. I managed to cut about 10 weights out from that big mass of line, like snagging a $10 bill with the price lead is going for now.

It seems like Channel 2 and 5 attracts the dumbarse. I guess we will have to constantly call FWC.

Yeah, but not sure how much good it'll do. The one that showed up didn't give them a ticket for the undersize snapper because (his exact words): "I could write tickets all day for people with short snapper, but then I wouldn't have time to catch the real bad guys." What is the point of walking out on the bridge doing the cooler checks then if you aren't going to write any tickets? Do you really think that a slap on the wrist and being told "don't do that again" is going to deter these people?

Yeah, she outfished me this time. Got the big grover and both the yellow jacks. She had never caught a big mangrove before, I warned her that the big ones will dig hard for the pilings to rock you, so when that one hit, she almost pulled a Bill Dance move trying to pull that snapper away from the structure.

Don't give up on it. Sometimes it is better to let them spear the tarpon and then call FWC. It is about evidence to prove his case for conviction. Same thing with the Jewfish situation that Chris and I ran into. If Chris was not there I would took photos and watch them put the Jewfish in their SUV. I would not say anything and pretend to be wow at their catch. Get their tag and description and call FWC and sheriff. Wait for them to arrive and watch the fun. It is disappointing at times but remember they are under staff and could only do so much.
