St Augustine/Matanzas Inlet

Post by jbt12282 »

I just got into town (Gainesville) and was wondering if anyone was catching anything with this polar front? Its freakin cold here.

As well, whats really around this time of year? any Spanish Macks, Reds, Tarpon or Flounder around?

I'm used to throwing x-raps and live shrimp down south, some DOA shrimp and rooster tails or swim baits too.

Any feedback is always appreciated :toast:

Thanks

This report is from the 12-24

Ponce Inlet

Joe Camp at the Fishin' Shack said he's still hearing about good action on reds and snook.

Matanzas Inlet

Ross Benz at the Devil's Elbow Fish Camp said sheepshead and drum on fiddler crabs at the bridge is the main bite. Redfish schools haven't hit the flats yet, but skinny waters are approaching the magic 60 degrees number for that, he said.

The new report comes out tomm. here is the link http://www.news-journalonline.com/NewsJ ... 122509.htm

Your lookin at a 2hr drive from gainesville to matanzas.

Thanks guys, as I said, I'm new (again) to this area. When I fished before I was about as rookie as they get - probably arent too much better now, but I like think I've gained a little ground.

I just checked out the new "Big Earl" report and I guess the Reds have hit the shallows and are schooling. I would think this is good for fishing but will this weather (snow) affect the bite at all, the report just says that they're around, not necessarily biting though? Also saw that some large snook are being slammed. I just caught my first line-side a few months ago down south and had no idea they came this far north, particularly this time of the year.

I'm probably going to cruise out to matanzas tomorrow morning, but I'm just nervous what this weather is going to do to the bite, particularly the Redfish, I've never caught one and thats next on the list :pistols: And what else is out there right now besides the trout and whiting, flounder maybe? Really just looking for some good fights, pics, and maybe some dinner. Probably no Tarpon, right?

Anyone with any insight, its always appreciated - 4pack of tallboys to anyone who wants to come out there tomorrow, its going to be a warm one! :toast:

Anyone have any advice on what to throw for Reds when they're schooling in the warmer shallows? Also, are there any spanish macks up here right now?

Went out to Matanza's on Saturday from 10-6pm. Windy, windy, windy with a little chill in the air. Started inside the inlet and the guy next to me got a tiny sheepshead. We were fishing live shrimp and fiddlers but didnt get anything, and yet again within minutes of arriving a pod of dolphins comes through for a few minutes. Moved inshore by the flats later on in the afternoon as the tide was going out, still soaked the shrimp and crabs but started throwing some artificials and got a nice red to hit on an xrap (xr-12), he was on for a minute but cut off on an oyster bed  I still have yet to get this first red! Did find bushels of oysters for $30 on the way home though and got to stop off at Smokie D's though. All in all it was a great day to be out by the water, got some great
BBQ, killer deal on oysters and found a new "spot" - It was just too windy and chilly, but they're there :toast: Happy Hunting
