If it's the kid I'm thinking of he bugs me every time I'm there during the week. He's a nice enough kid, but he's in his mid teen's. I don't know his situation, but I give stuff to everybody so it's not a big deal for me. I can see how it could get annoying. But like Herbert said, not everybody's parent's can afford or care enough to buy them basic fishing gear. I just hate to see a kid have to do with out because of that.

I have a pile of old rods and a couple reels too, I was going to post them as freebies here but if you want them Tommy to give out to deserving people, I'll donate them. Most are cheap stuff (Ugly Stiks, Offshore Angler) and a couple need tips, but they will be fine for fishing the pier.

Re: Anglins Pier Fishing Reports 2011 "ONLY REPORTS"
Went to the pier on Saturday with my 2 boys and my dad. Got there and even the guy working the parking lot told me no one has been coming back with any fish. Walked on the pier and heard a few mangroves were caught early in the morning. So I thought here we go again another day of slow fishing. Near the front hut a small school of mullet were circling. Pitched a live shrimp toward them in hopes of something following them. No hits. Some bait around so sent the sabiki down for a few minutes but no hits. It was so hot I decided to start out at the hut by the T so the kids could have some shade. When we walked up a lady was catching some a couple of small grunts. Looked under the T and hundreds of lookdowns/moonies. So pitched a live shrimp under the T and nothing. Then a couple of minutes later we were all hooking up. Caught at least 40 or more of them. Of course we attracted a lot of attention since no one else was catching anything. People started fishing right by us with a some success.
This is where one of those pier kids stories starts. He and his buddy jump right in between us. Tangled up lines with me when he left his line out and walked away. Then he tangled with my dad when he was pitching beside my dad. Some reason he believes that he should fish in the exact same spot under us. I got tired of catching moonies and went scouting. Ended up catching a short 9.5 inch mangrove so figured time to target the snappers. Went back to get some more bait when my dad hooks into a 16 inch bar jack. He held it in the water and I was able to pitch a shrimp to the other trailing jack. In the end we ended up with 2 bar jacks about 16 inches. I went back to looking for snappers and my dad says the kid was asking for some of our live shrimp since he ran out and he had even left his bucket right in the spot I first started to fish. No problem with money for this kid since his dad was fishing on the other side of the T. Well I next catch a 10.5 inch mangrove. My dad decided to fish for snappers too. He pulls out a 12 inch mangrove next. Of course here comes the kid again. Right under me literally. I ask him if he is gonna fish right under me all day and he says yes. At least he was able to catch two 10 inch mangroves and a couple of moonies because of me. LOL. We ended up with 5 mangroves between 10.5 inches and 13 inches and a few shorts that went back to grow. Bite slowed so I took the kids swimming for a couple of hours to cool off. What started as what I thought was gonna be a slow day turned out to be a great day with my kids and dad.

You have a hellavalot more patience than I do.
I'd be having a conversation with the kid and if that didn't work his pops.

Re: Anglins Pier Fishing Reports 2011 "ONLY REPORTS"
James, Actually I felt sorry for him. His dad was just ignoring him and doing his own fishing. His dad even told me it was his first time there but his kid goes all the time. My feeling is a dad should take the time to be with his kid and to try to teach him the right way to do things. His dad stood there and watched him doing all this and never said one thing to his kid. I blame the dad mostly. Kid looked like he was about 12. I personally don't think 12 year olds should be left out alone. Too many crazies out there. They should also be taught manners before they let them out by themselves. I have helped many kids on the pier especially when I see the dad not know what they are doing.

When you put it that way I understand the situation a bit better. A quick lesson on the ins and outs of fishing behavior is needed.

You guys seem like a good group of people. I might be heading out there this week. I never had much luck at the piers, but my little brother keeps bugging me about wanting to go to a pier instead of the local inlets I would rather fish at.

The wife and I made it out there on Saturday, but caught nothing but a suntan. Oh well, the worst day's fishing is much better than the best day doing anything else. We might try Pompano this weekend with a few friends.

Re: Anglins Pier Fishing Reports 2011 "ONLY REPORTS"
Tired.. I actually remembered you saying you would be out there with the scooters but I did not notice two scooters together. Dont give up on the pier. Just remember to try different spots, different baits, different techniques. I saw many people not catching fish but I had great day because I moved to different spots and used different techniques. Hint..squid doesn't work great there(unless you like grunts) , dead shrimp works OK but live shrimp or bait caught there work the best. Key is to be flexible. If you see me there say hi and I would be happy to help in any way I can. I have a black cart with a GATOR cooler and usually I have at least one of my sons with me.

Re: Anglins Pier Fishing Reports 2011 "ONLY REPORTS"
Another 20 hour weekend mostly at Anglins. Currents yesterday waffling north south flat, greenies easy to get, to the point we were throwing the bigger ones back in order to get a few that were four finger size. Dorks and cigs running by both days. Yesterday a few grovers in the cooler from my friend, my other pal had his cabo spooled by a tarpon, blue fish (1) caught today and bait was everywhere. No gogs but greenies coming up three at a time, pilchards in the surf and dorks running by all day. Today current running North, rain in the morning and then sauna time. Bait - all that you want - bites hard to come by a few cut offs and someone got paid early with a keeper - mangrove - If you put in your 8 hours you too could be the one who gets the cooler keeper. Freelining greenies, dorks, and pilchards, bottom baits same as mentioned in addition to anything else that was left by the short timers. File fish, triggers and grunts. Allot of people fishing and the turnover was fast. Kids with Sabikis, googins with chicken wire rigs with thirteen beads and a bell. Saw allot of happy kids landing bait and had a good time kicking it with friends new and old. Wife asked me where the fish is and I was lucky to have two donated grovers yesterday, had them with fava beans and a nice Chianti today. Came home and drank a six.....or was that eight.... think I'll sart on seven or nine

A dork jack is actually a leather jacket fish.

Denny that's a skip jack not a dork jack.
Was out saturday from 530 - 11:30. Rick(nice meeting you) already relayed the lack of fish. Nice day to be out. Conditions were great. Had two hits under the pier. Of course both times I was away from my rod dealing with bait.

What I have always called dork jacks are different from skipjacks AKA leatherjackets AKA nothing eats them.
They are just little baby jack crevalles.

dork Jacks have kind of a rounded head with the yellow tail. Skip jacks/ lether jacks look like the first one you posted. Was introduced to them on Juno a few years back when I grabbed it. Nice sting for 10-15 minutes.

yes, the skip jack is a tuna.
but if a dork jack is really a baby jack crevelle, what makes them so dorky?
Shouldn't they be called dwarf jacks instead? I demand we change the name lol.
