Dorks, leathers, greenies and pilchards. Allot of mix in bait and allot out there. Leathers can put the buzz of pain on you for extended minutes like James saidjames380 wrote:dork Jacks have kind of a rounded head with the yellow tail. Skip jacks/ lether jacks look like the first one you posted. Was introduced to them on Juno a few years back when I grabbed it. Nice sting for 10-15 minutes.

There are skip jack tunas....but in the piers and jetties the leather jackets are commonly called skip jacks.....It's a local thing in many places..names vary according to where you go.
Grey snappers = mangrove snappers = Mangos = black snapper = cubereta = caballerote, etc...
Jack crevalles = jack fish = jacks = Jurel = and if you are Cuban it depends where in Cuba you are from it is Gallego or Jiguagua = and the names go on and on
Dork jacks are baby jacks, commonly every body calls the baby jack crevales and horse eye jacks "Dork Jacks". The horse eye are extremly similar to jack crevalles when these are tiny. That would be the one James is referring to, the round head little jack.

Herbert, One time I was throwing a lure on the beach, and I asked a couple that were fishing if they had caught anything. A couple nice Kings was their reply. I was like kings? They said ya, check it out. They pulled out two slob kingfish (croaker). They were from up north and kingfish is what they call croakers. I guess every fish does have a different name depending on where you're from.

Re: Anglins Pier Fishing Reports 2011 "ONLY REPORTS"
I was out there Saturday with my younger brother. Nobody was really catching much. Lots of bait fish. I decided to free-line some pilchard and that fish cuban express posted a pic of.
On 3 separate occasions a huge fish, looked like a snook came right up to my bait and then snap runs away. I am guessing I would have had better luck with some fluorocarbon leader (the water was very clear). Then my brother throws in some baitfish he had that he wasn't planning on using and the fish snaps it off as soon as the fish hit the water. Incredible.

If you're looking to string a trotline, this is the wrong pier. Try Dania Pier. Ask the guy with a ponytail in the baitshop to point you in the best place to set it upTiredOldMan wrote:Me and the missus wuz out here fishin' on Sunday. T'weren't nuthin' much being caught. But I do vaguely remember something about how you can't use a yo-yo handline.
as a direct result of this, my yo-yo's were not used.

Skipjack tuna, in the picture, are also known as oceanic bonita, unlikely on a pier.

their holes and biting.

Re: Anglins Pier Fishing Reports 2011 "ONLY REPORTS"
Hi
I get to fish on this pier once a year and I am going to be there next week. What is a cheap rod & reel combo that would be good for pier fishing? When I have gone to Anglin's before I stripped the gears on my reel because I was using too heavy a weight. What is the best rig for fishing live bait? I usually catch some bait with a Sabiki (sp). Anyway, I am full of questions and no reports. I will post reports once I get to the pier.

Re: Anglins Pier Fishing Reports 2011 "ONLY REPORTS"
fishing was excellent this weekend. Saturday morning someone caught 4 yellow tail snapper. The rest of the day was a little slow. No big hits of my 6.0. But I did manage to catch a 22 pound bonito off a trolly rig Sunday morning. I caught right before the midway hut. Fought me all the way to the surf. 15 minutes later a tarpon hit took the kids rod right in the water way to funny. Good luck to everyone who is going out there. I'll be back next Saturday through Sunday morning.

You really can find cheap combos that are of good quality and manufacture at sports authority, kmart, and walmart. Off a pier, you need a good size rod, for casting. Your limits in weight is usually inscripted on the rod.JamesPL wrote:Hi

Re: Anglins Pier Fishing Reports 2011 "ONLY REPORTS"
Hi
I came, I saw and the pier conquered. I fished every day Thu 8/4 through Sunday 8/7/11. I did not catch too much. I caught some pretty nice sand perch on shrimp and gave them away. I also caught 2 or 3 blue runners. I hooked a big Barracuda on a pilchard and he jumped and then broke off. Anyway, I was watching what other fisherman were doing and picked up a few things. I wish I lived near the ocean. There was alot of bait. On Saturday, a school of fish came through and drove off all the pilchards. They were back by Sunday evening. Good luck to all.

Thanks for the report, you must have been there when we were fishing. Were you the guy with the beige long sleeve shirt? The pilchards came back at night and were gone as soon as they came.

Re: Anglins Pier Fishing Reports 2011 "ONLY REPORTS"
Depends on line, bait and current but I do see allot of people at different piers throwing a 1oz weight or less. The current normally would sweep your rig along the bottom until it gets tangled or crossed or both. 2-3-5oz weight should be your lead of choice for bottom fishing and this is not a published rule either, I see guys throwing 6oz because of their conventional set-up and line weight, this 6oz to help peel the line out when casting. Rule of thumb, if you want to keep your line on the bottom send enough weight to keep it there. Now, if your fishing for grovers or pier dwellers a light weight dropped on the up side of the current to let the rig sweep under the pier - with this light set-up it might be a rod of choice if your targeting specific species. Now having said that, allot of people go by the rule that the lightest lead you can get away with is the way to go. I agree with this as long as I'm holding the bottom. I have also used spiked surf weights in rocks and high current which I seem to have a real good lucky run with at times with no hang ups. I used this at Sebastian Inlet streight in the current and I kept my rig in one peice for a few trips before it was lost. I've also had days where I re-rigged 8 times using a 5oz- switched to a 4oz went back to a 5oz then tried a six.... go figure

Re: Anglins Pier Fishing Reports 2011 "ONLY REPORTS"
Clean up on the pier today. Tommy coordinated with the dive shop and about 20 divers spent over an hour plus loading buckets up with line, lead and all kins of stuff from the bottom on the South Side From mid hut to the "T". Short list of junk was phones, knives, rods, reels cast nets, enough line to circle the planet and even an anchor sitting in the rocks next to the pier. Wierd for the day was the pocket fisherman and a Barbie pink rod and reel....... We salvaged about 30 pounds of lead and that's not the total that came out of the water, some was junk and made it back to recycling. Got to admit this was the first time it was good to see a diver next to the pier.
