Freshwater Shiners for groupers

Post by Tonyc »

I was reading an article online that claims a freshwater shiner will live 27 minutes in saltwater . The guy was using them for grouper . Just wondering if anyone has any experience with it. I dont think i ever had a freshwater shiner live 27 minutes in freshwater .

Shiners are a bit small for grouper. Wouldnt be my bait of choice for grouper esp with so many other better baits that are easy to get. The shiners will live in salt water but not long at all.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

Pinfish are heartier, and easier to catch, but I guess if you wanted to get a dozen XL shiners it would be worth trying as long as you posted a report here with your findings.

I actually have some left over from bass fishing and though about toss them them out at the Icw bridge by my house for snook . I had no idea if they would live long enough to get ate .

They can probably live those 27 minutes if you just throw them in saltwater with no hook.
Stick a hook through their nose, + stress level, and salinity im pretty sure they wont survive 10 mins
